#101 Oil Level Dipstick

Post by Geoff Green » Fri Sep 26, 2014 3:15 am

Oil Level Dipstick

The first design of the dipstick was carried over from the XK series with the upper part grasped by hand changed to include instructions. The design called for multiple pieces and the oil level end was attached with two rivets. The second design had the oil level end welded in place.
Image

Level indicating "blade" attchment (note the felt washers):
Image
The level indicating markings on the tip changed as well. The first design had dots like the XK with the second design consisting of cross hatch pattern. 'E' stands for E-Type not empty!

#102 Scuttle Top Casing

Post by Ian Howe » Sat Sep 27, 2014 10:37 am

On early cars, the scuttle top casing on the passenger side (under the dash to hide the wires etc) was screwed at the rear to a long thin angle bracket (painted in rust red) that was screwed to the bulkhead.
Image

Later on this was simplified and the panel was attached by 2 self tapping screws, cup washers and spire nuts on to 2 brackets spot welded to the bulkhead.

#103 Unusual Factory mod to Early Car

Post by Ian Howe » Sat Sep 27, 2014 11:00 am

This is a picture of the Shut Pillar Assembly of a 62 car showing the bonnet locking mechanism with the hole below, which was sealed with a rubber plug.

Rubber Plug in Shut Pillar:
Image

The early cars did not have a hole in the shut pillar - but 875039 has a factory fitted aluminium panel covering, what I assume is the hole, on both sides! Whilst I have not seen this mod on any other cars, I understand that several other cars of this age have the panels.

Fitting of the bellows on the early RHD cars was problematic - and the factory had to 'modify' the bulkhead as below.
Image

Early hinges have a grease nipple:
Image

The very early cars had a unique hub carrier - C15229-4 - which was not even listed in the Part Manual - there was no water thrower and the outer bearing was smaller so the 'end' was straight.
Image

Hub carier C19063 as mentioned in the Part Manuals for the early cars for comparison.

The dash bracket to receive the bonnet locating pegs had an unusual gasket #C25649 made of woven jute and is no longer available from the usuals:

It is available on eBay however and easily cut to size:

Door Barrier Parts

Although not listed in the parts catalogs all Series 1 cars have the plastic film, foam and metal closure panels. Plastic film moisture barrier:
Image

With the plastic removed there is a round foam support at inside handle and lower access opening blanking panels. I have two sizes of the black round foam from different cars. They measure #1 at 65mm OD and #2 50mm OD. Both are 9.5mm thick medium density black foam:

Foam at door inside handle:

Front steel panel riveted in place:

Rear steel panel riveted in place:

The metal panels have a black mastic under the upper edge where they are riveted to the door. The orange glue is brushed on to hold the plastic film:

Owners Wallet

An owners document pouch was supplied with each car after August 1961. These were brown vinyl with a grained pattern to resemble leather, a clear vinyl front, maroon pop stud and the Jaguar wings printed in gold on the upper leaf which was a squared off shape. This was the style supplied with the 3.8's:

Maintenance Vouchers

Every car was supplied with a book of Maintenance Vouchers which documented the service intervals. They were printed by W.W. Curtis Ltd of Coventry and had a serial number E/119/X where 'X' denoted the print run, 1 to 7. A service was due at 2,500 mile intervals and the books had vouchers up to 40,000 miles. Each detachable voucher listed the work required and was handed to the customer with the invoice. The Service department was expected to stamp, date and record the mileage on the stubs. The first (500 mile) service was free of charge:
Image

The usually missing free service voucher:

Image
Jaguar used a generic book of vouchers that applied to all models in the range with different intervals for automatic and/or power steering equipped vehicles. Service items specific to the E-Type were marked as such.
Image

An E-Type specific book of vouchers only became available with the launch of the 4.2 cars. Additional copies were available from the Service Department at a cost of 2/6d.

Jaguar Drivers Club Membership

The document wallet always contained a prospectus and membership application for the Jaguar Drivers Club, an organisation of which Sir William Lyons was immensely proud. The 12 page booklet was printed by W. W. Curtis Ltd of Coventry suggesting Jaguar paid for the printing. There is no date or other code on the booklet although the telephone number 'Hunter 2626' tells us it was published no later than 1964 which was when AFN (all figure numbers) were introduced in London. Later editions changed over the years and showed different pictures, membership costs and phone number (to 01-486 2626). This was the pamphlet supplied with the 3.8 E-Type's:

'With Compliments From The Service Department' Slip

This 3"x 4" slip was in the Owners Wallet although it is extremely rare to find for some reason. I assume the 'With Compliments' referred to the fact there was no charge for the handbook - the Mk IX handbook was priced at 5/- (shillings) for example:

Owner's Identification Card

Jaguar Dealers provided owners with an ID card (Factory issued) for Warranty claim purposes. The Warranty on the E-Type was 6 months and not transferable so the original owners identity and car details were of importance (as can be seen by the exhortation to "use indelible rubber stamp"). Maybe the old 'tax disc in brake fluid' trick was used to make illicit warranty claims - it was obviously a concern at the time
Image

Although the handbooks contained a copy of the Warranty and a page to record car number details an owner might find themselves seeking assistance during a journey so a 'money-wallet' friendly card was provided. The cards were given to Jaguar owners's from the mid 1950's onwards up through early E-Type production (~mid 1962?). I assume Jaguar stopped supplying the cards to the Dealers at some point and the Dealers continued to issue them until they ran out of stock. No idea if these were issued anywhere other than the UK. The cards are very rare, presumably because they were kept in the owners money wallet rather than the car wallet and discarded after 6 months as they were no longer valid. I have only seen two, this blank one and the completed one for my FHC but no doubt there are others out there.

Handbrake

There were three versions of the 3.8 handbrake mechanism:
C17450/C17451 - up to #850089/875331/860003/885014
C19904/C19905 - up to #850550/875566/860663/886262
C19830/C19831 - up to end of 3.8 production

The J30 August 1961 Spare Parts Catalogue shows the mechanism fitted to the very first cars. It is a relatively simple affair with a domed head adjuster bolt and hexagonal socket requiring a special tool. :
Image

The J30 June 1963 SPC shows the later more complex mechanism with a slotted screw:
Image

Handbrake Adjusting Tool

The early cars had an adjusting screw with a domed head and hexagonal slot so a "Special Wrench for handbrake adjustment" was provided. The August 1961 shows the Special Wrench as #C18636 (4" x 7/8" x 3/16") but the June 1963 J30 SPC does not list it. SPB K.36 lists the deletion. The JCNA concours Judging Guide acknowledges this and the Special Wrench presence or absence in cars above #850089/875331/860003/885014 is ignored.
Image

Later cars from #850090/875332/860004/885015 were fitted with self adjusting brakes so had no need for the Special Wrench.

Battery terminal removal tool

Some tool kits included an 'L' shaped screwdriver #C10154 in place of the Allen key and used for removing the battery post slotted screws - necessary because the right hand post is under the heater box with the battery installed correctly (terminals to the rear):

Running In Sticker

The home market Owners wallet usually included a 2 ?? x 14" 'Running In' sticker supplied by the RAC together with an RAC application card or brochure, unsurprising since Sir William was an RAC honorary 'Life' member. These stickers are very rare because if they were used they would be destroyed when removed. Many owners probably thought it was a personal affront to use the sticker and discarded them immediately!
Image

Trivia: The RAC changed the style of its badges/logos over the years usually because of a change in Monarch - it was the 'Royal' automobile club after all. The 'diamond' logo introduced in 1946 gave way to the George VI design in the early '50's but had to be withdrawn with his sudden and untimely death in February 1952. The 1953 Elizabeth II Coronation design remained in service until the 1970's when it was replaced by the square design. Interestingly the RAC continued to use the 1940's diamond style for the running in stickers, albeit without the crown:

RAC Associate Membership Prospectus

Along with the Running In sticker Jaguar included a 24 page prospectus and membership application in the home market Owners Wallet. The centre pages were the application form, remittance form and Bankers order. The cost of Associate membership was two guineas (?2/2/0), initial joining fee was 10s (covered the cost of badge and key to RAC/AA rescue boxes) and the RAC guide and Handbook was 8/6d. Alternatively you could have life membership at a cost of ?42. This booklet is dated March 1960 and remained current until 1965.

Fan Belt

The fan belts were supplied by Dunlop and up to engine #R5249 were a single 'V' cogged belt #C15840 with matching pulleys. From engine #R5250 (~June 1962) a 'Duplex' belt #C19524 was used with twin 'V' tracks. The aluminium water pump pulley was replaced by a cast iron version modified to suit the new belt design along with with the dynamo, crankshaft and jockey pulleys. The novel design of the belt meant it was not widely available from Motor Factors so Jaguar supplied a spare fan belt in the luggage compartment and the following advisory leaflet in the Owners Wallet.
Image

The spare fan belt is listed in the June 1963 J30 SPC under the Tool Kit section but is not in the original August 1961 printing. The J38 4.2 SPC does not list the fan belt suggesting these later cars did not get the benefit of the spare. Presumably by 1964 the Duplex belt was widely available after-market (it was used on the Mk2 and Mk10 saloons).

OTS Boot Lid Supports

There were three different boot lid supports on the very early cars. At first the cars had a thin alloy casting but this obviously proved to be prone to bending and breaking:
Image

It was modified by welding two of the supports together for added strength:
Image

The third iteration was a much thicker cast aluminium support which continued throughout production:
Image

Geoff Green adds: "Single hinges were used until about June 1961 #875100 (875100 Dual, 875103 Single, 875115 Dual) and Dual until about September 1961 #875778 with the thick single cast used from #875779 onward."

Hinge Mounting Bracket

Further to David's excellent post on the boot hinges. The early hinges assemblies had a mounting bracket with mounting holes 3.5 cm apart - the later hinge mounting brackets had a piece welded on moving the mounting holes to 7cm apart.

#118 ENGINE MARKINGS

Post by Ian Howe » Fri Jan 02, 2015 5:10 pm

Engine Markings

On the front left hand side of the timing cover you often find a series of 3 letters - see below - and the same letters on the block. These identify that the timing cover has been machined with the block and are a pair (thanks to Mike M for this information):
Image
Image

The block has the cylinder Block Number cast on the side - C17523 for the E Type - this photo is from engine R 1074-9 so very early indeed:
Image

The cylinder head number showing a '1' used as the dash:
Image

Casting date for engine R1074-9:
Image

Some engines have had the original number ground off by the factory (I presume the factory ran short of E Type blocks) and the Block Number 17523 stamped on the side - this is from R 4645-9:
Image

Engine R1470-9 has C17200 stamped on the side - this is usually associated with Mk9 blocks but the engine is undisturbed!:

Heater Hoses

The three elbow hoses #C17777, #C17778 and #C17779 for the heater were pre-formed cotton reinforced smooth rubber with a raised moulded white rubber stripe to denote they were glycol proof. The hoses continued to be used up through S2 production but are no longer available with the stripe.

Lens Buffer Washers

Image
The special slotted chrome screws retaining the side/stop/tail/flasher lenses were held in place by 3/8" diameter rubber washers #6524. These acted to both retain the screws when the lens was removed and, more importantly, act as a buffer between the lens and casting. If the washers are omitted there is a high likelihood the lens will crack or the fragile screw recess will part company:
Image
Image

They are no longer available from the usuals but I found a suitable alternative as M4 9mmx4mmx1.5mm rubber washers. Not cheap (25 for ?10.75 +p&p) but a lot cheaper than the lenses!: http://shop.deltarubber.co.uk/rubber-wa ... herm4.html
