Hi Guys,

I have a 2+2 under restoration. It's a 1966 currently in Light Blue Metallic with a red interior. Originally it was Golden Sand ( with the red interior) but the only owner prior to me at some time switched to the Blue. I'm told 60's Golden sand was particularly prone to flaking and lifting hence probably the reason for the switch. I wonder, as it's number matching and a 9/8/66 manufacture / 17th August supply date, should I revert to the original or keep as is in the blue? Either way it needs a new respray and a new interior so it's a free choice. To me the blue is the best option but the Golden Sand is pretty rare and of course takes the car back to it's original spec.

What to do??? :?

its your car so your choice. but my preference would be to return to original spec, since you state that it needs doing anyway.

and its always nice to have the heritage certificate match the car, feels more correct/authentic.
folk will always question why it was changed, as you have in fact wondered yourself

Hi Johnny.......Have heard and others may be able to confirm that Golden Sand as an original colour reserver for.....Celebrities.......True or False?.......A friend has the colour on a 2+2 and it does look smart......Steve

Well one of my main concerns was the durability effect of this kind of innovative colour in the paint matrix. Technology has moved on so I'm happy in the technical specification and longevity of the colour in use...it's just the principle of the colour switch should I shouldn't I? But my gut feeling is to go back to original

I have seen one car done in Golden Sand; it looks glorious.

Let us dispel the urban myths please. Opalescent Golden Sand was a standard colour and not "reserved" for anyone in particular. It was an 'Opalescent' paint produced by ICI and just as hardy as the 'Opalescent Silver Blue, 'Opalescent Dark Blue', 'Opalescent Dark Green', 'Opalescent Gunmetal', 'Opalescent Silver Grey', 'Opalescent Bronze' and 'Opalescent Maroon'. So it was not "innovative" but something Jaguar was prepared to offer as a durable proven product across the range. Hi Johnny

The car Dave has posted pictures of above is mine and my son Steve's when we bought it. We are keeping it original and absolutely LOVE this colour. I have seen a number of examples of cars this colour (although it is not common) and if I can find some I will post them, simply gorgeous.

We are almost ready to repaint ours and I obtained a paint sample recently of Opalescent Golden sand (1965-1967). There is a later version approx 1983-1995 which is slightly darker and not as nice so beware. When we got the car it had been blown over and stood for 40+ years and the colour was very faded and not right. It seems that it is now only available as a solvent based paint and we will add a two pack clear lacquer over the basecoat to protect it.

I read these rumours about it being a special colour and as Dave says take them with a pinch of salt, having said that we were told our car was sold new to the head of Jaguar New York and it was painted in July/August 1964 before that colour was even supposed to have come out, makes you wonder why?

Keep it original mate.

+1 for originality. I was scared to paint mine in its original beige colour. I'm now so happy with the result, and quite proud to have a rare colour.

Having an Oldtimer is also assuming its particularities.

Like mine.
Looks great, great choice if you never use the car, but for driving ?
Forget it ........... Underneath and Underbonnet are totally unforgiving, impossible to keep looking clean.

Nothing special about it at all, except that it looks very good with a red interior and is not all that common on Es. A friend of mine had a FHC in golden sand and it does suit the shape very well

I would be embarrassed to have an E that was spotless anywhere, or even substantially clean as far as the undercarriage is concerned. I would be mortified if people thought it was cleaned more than driven.

Fortunately, I have never been afflicted with such a car. Bottom-feeders rarely come across them. :-)

My car originally was Gold but during its restoration I changed it to Opalescent Silver Grey just because I didn't like the Gold. I took the view that I was restoring the car for me and not for value and I'm very happy with my decision.

My heritage certificate states ''Sand' as its original colour. I had a discussion with an old guy who had done a lot of spraying in the 60's and 70's and he thought that there were two versions of Golden Sand an earlier version that was a very flat dull metallic and a later version that was a much brighter deeper gold.

While dismantling my car I could clearly see its original shade behind the dashboard and other hidden areas, the colour was a very pale flat gold. Does anyone know if there are two versions of the Gold, ie Sand and/or Opalescent Golden Sand? I always wondered.

know if there are two versions of the Gold, ie Sand and/or Opalescent Golden Sand? I always wondered.
The knowledge base shows sand as an additional colour in 1963/64
then opalescent golden sand in 1965=67

so the year of your car should determine what colour is behind the dash.
this should stop you wondering :lol:
