#1 heater box

Hi there,

Anyone has any experience in replacing/overhauling heater box of a 1966 series 1 FHC ?

I would like to first review it but am unsure what I need to do first before taking it ot and what to look out for.

Any help much appreciated !

Did it a couple of months ago. You will need to partially drain the radiator to avoid water spillage, disconnect the battery and heater motor leads. Remove the two hoses, the control wire clamp and then the four bolts holding the heater - it will lift off as a complete unit. Take care that the foam seal between the heater box and bodywork does not disintegrate. Replacements are available.

Remove the motor (four nuts) and set to one side. Remove the 5 screws holding the end plate on and the setscrew held end collar. The heater core is supported top, bottom and end with heat resistant foam seals but the core should just slide out. Check for leaks - if there is evidence replace the core with a new one from SNG Barratt.

The tin box itself is fairly hardy but prone to rust so you may want to strip clean, repair and re-paint (gloss black). Alternatively SNG sell a repro item if it is beyond repair.

Check the fan impeller is not broken (they are prone to crack). Again SNG can provide a replacement but it is metal and not plastic as original. The motors bearings can seize or squeal if they are not lubricated. Add a couple of drops of oil (no more) to each bearing. SNG can sell you a reconditioned motor if yours has broken. Check the heater motor speed resistor is not burnt out. Replacements are available - simple soldering job if required.

Reassembly is the reverse of the above using new seals if required. The upper and lower seals are available along with the case to body seal (probably worth replacing it anyway). Glue the body seal to the case with superglue as it will invariably fall off when you try and mount the box.

Before remounting the box check the motor turns freely as the impeller can catch the sides of the box if it has not been fitted correctly. Easier to do before the whole thing is attached to the car!

In my research I found there were originally two other seals - one between the motor mounting plate and the box and the other underneath the metal grill on the top. No one seems to supply these but I found a set on eBay.

Total time to dismantle/reassemble - about 2 hours. How much work or parts will be needed in between will depend on the condition of your heater box.

#4 follow up heater box

A follow up question.

Does anybody know if when you have reassembled the heater box, and you want to put on the metal ring with the metal mesh, does it need some kind of "cushion" or "glued gasket" when putting the metal ring back on the box itself ?

According to the parts manual there is a circular gasket between the motor plate and the box (part no C17310) and another circular rubber gasket under the metal ring and pressing on the mesh (part no C25455) - stops it rattling or moving. I saw a set on eBay (USA) and bought them but you could try SNG quoting the part numbers. It is amazing how many parts they stock that are not in their catalogue so always have the Jaguar part number to hand.

The rubber gasket deteriorates and literally glues the fixing ring to the box. Be careful taking the ring off to ensure you do not buckle it - use a long sharp knife.

Many thx. I agree fully as I buy here in Belgium with local dealer and in his catalogue, the part is even not mentioned.

I did as you told and called SNG barrat. They did have it as part of the seal kit for the heater box !
