#1 INDICATOR SWITCH REPAIR

Post by Minerva » Wed Feb 18, 2015 11:56 pm

The indicator switch on my S1.5 is failing to hold position.
Its the nylon spring arrangement but is it possible to change it and where do i find one?
I heard MGB. Scimiter/ Triumph are the same if you can get it out, but which one - there are so many. Anyone done this without buying a whole new unit for ?120?

If RMJ Smith do indeed sell this part could you confirm that in this thread? I have a number of defunct indicator stalks that I could repair.

Drop Richard an email - he is very helpful, especially if you mention the Forum: rmj@rmjsmith.fsnet.co.uk

Hi Minerva,

If it is of any help the Lucas part number for the repair kit I bought for my 65 Series One was 54325591. I have just checked the web site of the place I bought it, but they are now sold out. They do come up on the internet from time to time, but usually at a very inflated price. http://www.cecbrighton.co.uk/page14_30.html#ecomm_1_309

Thanks guys and good to know that something exists. All I have to do now is find one! RM and J Smith not answering phones or email at present. And I have sent an email to check CEC.

Paulsco - is that a Lucas part number or CEC's own?

Anyone know about MG/Rover compatibility?

Its the Lucas number. I am not sure if your 1.5 uses exactly the same indicator as the 65 Series One though; I think the Series two one may be different. If you Google for Lucas 54325591 pictures, you will be able to see what it looks like. Its a model 85 indicator unit, but they are not all identical. http://www.ebay.ie/itm/1574-Jaguar-Luca ... 3381b354d2

I have just bought a new repair spring with rivet from RMJ Smith for ?18+pp. So providing I can successfully replace the rivet it's going to be a very cost effective repair and way better than using a second hand one. :D

Paulsco - It is an S1 fitting. And it is the same as an MGB so there should be loads lying around. I think it's an ideal candidate fro 3D printing. Thanks all.

There are three Lucas/Jaguar catalogues (1962, 1965, 1973) in the Forum 'Knowledge Base' and they show the indicator switch as Lucas Model 85SA:

That indicator stalk with the flange on it looks wrong. Is that from a Mk2?

Also look here! A goldmine of Lucas grimoires!

Update on the indicator repair. The spring finally broke into pieces on the bench.
I got a replacement nylon spring from RM Smith for about ?18 and with a bit of help it is now working as it should. Actually took about an hour but there are a lot of small bits in there which make it very fiddly. The rivet was OK but you have to be careful not to use too much force.
The only issue was reassembly of the switch onto the steering column. I realised that the cancelling ring that didn't fit well was actually broken and made of nylon and from another car. Made another but the earth was poor and bolts were wrong. After a few miles of use I lost the internal telltales, though they worked if you flash the headlights. Earthing through the column was marginal but now fully sorted. In fact its amazing it worked for 25 years!
(About 6 hours of fiddling and fettling and cussing)
