#1 How much oil??

Post by r.ludeke » Thu Feb 19, 2015 3:13 pm

Hello everyone, i am in the proces of filling my engine with oil and after 8 years of restoring starting the engine finally. But it's making me a bit nervous, the first site i checked for the oil capacity is kroon oil here in the netherlands. They said it was 6.3 litres :?
Not even close it was, the i found in the manual 8.5 litres but it is now just at the minimum. Further investigation lead me to the website of mossmotors
http://www.mossmotors.com/MemberService ... pecsID=141
It says 18 pints, us pints would give 8.5 litres but imperial pints will give 10.3. I think if i fill her up with 10 litres the dipstick will be to the max.
Which one is the correct capacity??

Kind regards, Rolf

According to the handbook S2 4.2 should be 15 pints.. 8.5 lit refill including the filter...the level on the dipstick depends on if u have the correct one and if it is installed correctly ...Steve

Hello, thanks for your answers. Where does the 18 pints which is mentioned on the mossmotors website came from? I must say that with the 9.5 litres oil i put in the dipstick finally shows halfway the mark where it should be :D . It looks like 10 litres will show as full on the dipstick mark. But it's till confusing to me. By the way, when turning the engine with the startermotor and no plugs in the engine the oil pressure shown on the meter is 40 psi :D :D

I would not put more oil in to bring it to the level on the dip stick if u already have more than 8.5 lit.....are u sure u have the correct dip stick. and it is in straight....Steve

Yes i'm sure the dipstick is the correct one it has an "e" mark. The only thing else i can think off is the oil filter conversion that is on the car and that the engine had a complete rebui;ld so there was totally no oil in the engine when filling her up.

Kind regards Rolf

Even after a re-build, with no oil in the filter, and none in the oilways , I believe 14.5 pints should completely fil it to the correct level. In fact, you could calibrate your dipstick with that.

Thank you all for the information, i will leave it as it is now. i now added about 10 litres but lost some becuase i removed the oil filter again and got the oil filter house from the engine and replaced the springs in the relief valve, just to be sure
The dipstick is indicating halfway the mark now. Should be safe now? And as i said just cranking the engine gives allmost 40 psi :D

Rolf, as they are taken directly from the owner's manual, the numbers shown in David's post are correct. Oil changes with both of my E-Types required 9.0 U.S. quarts (8.5 L) to bring things up to the recommended level.

Regarding the 40 PSI you achieved while cranking brings me to another subject. E-Type oil-pressure readings tend to be all over the map, thanks to the questionable reliability of the sender unit. I prefer to temporarily install a mechanical VDO gauge when starting a freshly rebuilt engine, or one that has been sitting for a long period of time.

I read a lot of posts about the senderunit. I calibrated it first with air pressure. The reading was not spot one but close enough. The difference was not more than a couple of psi with a pressure of 40 psi.
