heater box airflap linkage

I have just installed a new heater box to my '64 car. The airflap does
not move when I operate the "OFF-AIR-ON" handle on the dash.
I would like to know how the axle of the airflap is linked with the
heater box lever whereon the cable is attached ? What am I missing here ?

The axle of the heater flap should have a square section. The lever has a bolt which, in theory, tightens it against the axle square section. Bit of a poor design, especially if you are using reproduction parts, as the lever spins on the axle because of lack of grip. Try filing the axle end square and making sure the lever bolt is tightened up really well. I had this problem on mine and can't remember what I did to fix it, but it has worked reliably since. I will refresh my memory tomorrow and take a picture for you.

If you have the early style heater box (matt black, return spring on outside) it should look like this:



The first picture shows the outer sheath clamp which is essential to proper operation and the inner cable which is locked to the control arm welded to the axle. Moving the dash lever upwards will draw the inner cable and control arm upwards closing the air vent. The second picture shows the return assist spring and arm which I now recall is the one that is difficult to secure. On my car I had to modify the lever by a) flattening it, b) fabricating my own attachment boss and c) installing it back to front otherwise the spring fouled the bonnet catch.

The later heater box (gloss black, fitted to 4.2 cars) has a revised all in one control arm and return spring arrangement with nothing on the outer side.

On my new heater box (gloss black) I have the axle of the heater flap which should be connected with the cable lever that is fitted on an "on the box" welded axle. It's not fitted like yours.
Can you tell me how to post a picture to this forum ?

If your box is gloss black it is likely to be the later version but the principle is the same. Post a picture and we can go from there.

OK - you have the later style heater box and you are missing the small spring which fits between the levers. Difficult to explain and I don't have a picture to hand but it works as an over centre device forcing the actuating lever against the stop - without it the flap will not work correctly. I assume the outer sheath is clamped tightly by the bracket - it must not move, only the centre wire can move.

Anyone else here got this type of heater box they can photograph for Dirk?

Is there a partnumber for the spring I'm missing. I have looked in the
partsbooks but it's not described. Should it be available from one of
the usual suppliers ? Many thanks so far.

I have been unable to find the part number either but you could try looking in the S2 parts book which I do not have. The spring is galvanised and about 3/8" in diameter, 1/2" long and fairly strong. It fits tightly over the two cut outs in the black lever and presses against the silver lever in your photograph. Your best bet is to ring SNG Barratt as they most likely will have the part if you describe it. Even better would be to email them the picture and ask for the correct spring. Picture tells a thousand words etc.

The partnumber for the spring is probably 400542 and will get it from
