Inside Jaguar

I know one was bought by a big dealer group and "put away". Perhaps they did not all sell to preferred buyers?

I was just gob-smacked at those who were racing their original lightweights. At ?5m (I think that's the sort of money they were talking about) I wouldn't dare. I presume you can't get insurance for that sort of thing?

Racing a ?5,000,000 E-Type is just the same as racing a ?30,000 one. Crash either and they can be rebuilt for about ?100,000.
As for the program, which I only got around to watching last night, I side with the Earl of March. They are not in the spirit of the originals. The original LWE's were given a quick flash over with paint before being sent out to race so what were they thinking in spending weeks 'perfection painting' the continuation cars. ?40,000 to repaint the bonnet alone if if gets damaged
As a result they are destined never to be raced and will end up as trophies. Jaguar should have raced them with guest drivers for a couple of seasons and then put them up for auction with all proceeds to charity. They would have been accepted into the racing fraternity and the publicity and heritage that Jaguar got out of it would have been immeasurable.

I somewhat see where you're coming from but can just imagine the reception that plan would have received at the first brainstorm meeting:Heuer wrote: Jaguar should have raced them with guest drivers for a couple of seasons and then put them up for auction with all proceeds to charity. "Nice presentation Mr X. Your enzusiasm does you kredit. So if I understood you we spend millions making zix cars, ensuring we'll probably never recoup our investment fully and zen we giff them away?"
"Yes Dr Speth. It's called 'Paying it Forward' "
"I zuspect Mr Tata would prefer we pay it back."

"Jaguar Land Rover has revealed its profits rose to ?2.6 billion over the last year as it gears up for the launch its Black Country-powered XE Jaguar. JLR has spent more than ?3 billion on its factories and new cars, including its engine plant on the i54 site, on the border of Wolverhampton and South Staffordshire. It is now planning to spend up to ?3.8 billion in the coming year after revealing plans to almost double the size of its i54 site, which could create another 1,000 jobs, as it launches more new cars including a convertible Evoque and the Jaguar F-Pace crossover."
The ?1.5 million it cost to (over) build the continuation cars is small Bavarian beer compared to the ?674,700,000 pa spent on advertising. Huge opportunity missed - a 'Mistry' I guess

"as it launches more new cars including ..... the Jaguar F-Pace crossover."
Yikes! I wasn't aware of this one. I like the F-type every bit as much as the next man, but is this as ghastly an abomination as it sounds??

EDIT: I've just Googled it. It's every bit as horrible as I'd imagined, if not worse!

They have just announced they are going ahead with the J-Pace crossover - similar concept but bigger.

Just as well JLR don't turn to a forum of E-type and classic die-hards for customer clinic feedback. The SUV/Crossover market is a massive segment that no serious car maker can ignore or fail to supply. So if Porsche can do it, and Bentley, let alone everyone else, why not Jaguar? Especially as their sister company is a world leader?Simon P wrote:, but is this as ghastly an abomination as it sounds??

You'll be relieved to hear, Simon, that there is supposedly going to be get-out clause for those who dislike the genre (I'm not uber-crazy about it myself). To wit - buying an F-PACE will apparently not be compulsory? Could be just a rumour of course...

Yes they are all at it:
Rolls-Royce Cullinan
Bentley Bentayga
Maserati Levante
Lamborghini Urus
Hugely profitable market segment and, as Pete says, Jaguar have a massive head start thanks to LR.

The joke about the programme, which must have annoyed the vet guy, was the total and utter absence of anything to do with engine, transmission, induction suspension or brakes. Anything in fact other than body and trim. I'm not even convinced they built the body from scratch though they may have. I saw panels being assembled but not made, other than one flat sheet being rolled to and fro on an English wheel to no real effect.
But then the 'craftsmen' spell would have been broken if Evans showed thrm breaking open packing cases with other company's engines and gearboxes and harnesses etc.
The program was several minutes old before I realised it wasn't Martin Brundle narrating....

You could tell Evans was dying to have a go, he's more of a hands on sort. Incidentally I'm a massive Brundle fan and had the pleasure of meeting him at one of our many F1 outings at Silverstone 5 years ago. Very pleasant chap it has to be said. The autograph hangs pride of place with DC's. And he's an e type man!

All done for effect - they could have let him drive Car Zero which was the Jaguar prototype used for demonstration and publicity purposes. There is a suggestion Car Zero was the car CMC built around the genuine Jaguar LWE body shell separated from the Lindner parts. We know the Marston radiator came from Fosseway, the exhaust system from Ecosse Motorsport, engine Crossthwaite & Gardner, body RS Panels (?) etc etc.
All that banging on about it being a "million pound car" cuts no ice when Andrew English test drove a Ferrari 250 SWB for the Daily Telegraph last week. Due for auction shortly with an estimate of ?6,000,000. Annette Mason and Francie Clarkson took the ?25m Ferrari 250 GTO on a European rally a couple of years back.
I go back to my suggestion that Jaguar should have raced the six and auctioned them after a few seasons - would have been great publicity and established a true market value. That program simply showed Joe Public the image of Jaguar owners is the same now as it was in the '60's - rick kids with expensive toys!

True. I appreciate that car makers are there to cater for public demand - even if the public is often given to a woeful lack of taste :)PeterCrespin wrote:Just as well JLR don't turn to a forum of E-type and classic die-hards for customer clinic feedback. It puts me in mind of an F12 Berlinetta saw going up and down Park Lane yesterday in pearlescent white paint with a red scoop up the side and rear diffuser picked out in red. Surely Ferrari's response when the customer asked for this to be done should have been to say 'No' and direct him to one of their competitors.... 8)

It probably would have been, if he'd already put down a hefty non-returnable deposit! Having said that, kudos to the driver for not following the herd. Seeing a red Ferrari is as stimulating as eating your tenth bar of chocolate in succession: Very nice and all that, but one can have too much of a good thing.Simon P wrote:Surely Ferrari's response when the customer asked for this to be done should have been to say 'No' and direct him to one of their competitors.... 8)

My father lost a bet trying to eat two packs of these:

There are 12 in a pack, at about 17 he gave up and do not ask what happened next when he had to leave the room very quickly....

Having just watched the programme on catch up tv. i would say that statement sums it up very well.I go back to my suggestion that Jaguar should have raced the six and auctioned them after a few seasons - would have been great publicity and established a true market value. I think lord March should let the new light weights race at GoodWood,... providing the cars wear the Indian flag.
