#1 Replace or recore S1 raditor?

Post by thegfb » Tue Jul 21, 2015 8:23 pm

I have what seems to be a minor leak in my S1 3.8 radiator and certainly the core looks to have had a fairly hard life with some evidence of stone damage etc.
It has an aftermarket electric fan (p/no LMEF 16(?)) fitted to it - engine side to draw air through it - that is attached directly to the core and is operated via a temp switch assembly inserted in the top hose.
Generally speaking pre leak the rad/fan worked well - even in hot weather the temperature guage not rising much above 90' and in normal weather the guage would show 70' or thereabouts.
It is a late '61 car - originally l/h drive Texas car - and the diagram of the rad shown in the SNG Barratt does not match the layout of mine but I guess the SNG diagram is not definitve to my car.
Should I be looking at a new rad - aluminium or brass etc - or is it more sensible to get mine re-cored? Either way any thoughts or recommendations would be gratefully received.

Thanks

Gareth

Speak to Fosseway Performance. They will supply you with a superb Marston clone radiator - all 3.8's were delivered with Marston radiators. The orginals cannot be recorded or repaired so anything you have in your car currently is not stock. Either get a modern brass version or go for the iconic Marston.

Alternatively you can get a cheap and cheerful aluminium one off Ebay. I have one in my 3.8; seems to work well and cost less than a recore.

I'm compiling a history of the radiator configurations over life of the S1 series. I would greatly appreciate if you would PM me a photo of the one in your car. Thanks.

Thank you David and Andrew.

Eric I'll send a pic once I've got it off. I guess it's quite likely that it's not the original though!
