#1 Driveshaft fabrication - 5-Speeds

Post by trondvo » Thu Jul 23, 2015 10:21 am

Having problems getting shaft and tranny mount for the enigne-tranny package I bought and suppose I'll have a driveshaft made up for the car. The tranny is a "5-Speeds" Tremec and the enigne-tranny package came without mount and drivshaft.

The mount seems like it can be fabricated by modifying a stock bracket and I have one in spare.

This photo is from "5 speeds" site to illustrate the part(s) needed.

Have contacted 5-speeds too many times with no respons and have to make progress. There was talk about someone "replicating" the "5-speeds" kit in the UK and would buy from other sources if available.

Otherwise, anyone with a series 1 OTS or FHC and a 5-speed kit from Mediatronics installed that would be willing to measure driveshaft length and anyone recommend a good driveshaft fabricator?

My FHC seem to have a 3.07 diff originally or retrofitted, it made just over 3 revolutions to have the marks lign up.

Suppose a 0.73 5th (which I have in the Tremec) will give me very low revs on the motorway, question is whether it will be too low?

Would be interested in opinions as I also have a 3.54 unit I picked up for very little money. Plan to restore that unit as a backup/swap.

From the Forum Knowledge Base: RPM to MPH Calculator (check your gear ratios): http://wahiduddin.net/calc/calc_speed_rpm.htm

I have a 2.88 with a T5 box and 100mph = 3,000 rpm in 0.8 top so I think the 3.07 will be about the same with the 0.73 (103mph actually). You can always change down! The 3.54 will be far too low for Europe.

Thanks for the input David, from the calculator you linked I estimated these numbers (185 radials w 70 profile could give app 12.7" but I will measure).

Thanks for the feedback, 3.07 it shall be and I got a positive answer from Elite Transmissions!

Before ordering I need to get further down the road, they wanted me to measure the distance from IRS to gearbox flange and that is about 35 meters right now.

When you say 5 Speeds, do you mean Paul C?
If so I have found him very helpful. He does have issues with selling in Britain; see his website for details.
If email is no good call him on the phone. I have done so (from Australia) and have found him instantly available. He is quite blunt in an American Italian kind of way but very helpful.

Hi I would strongly advise you to fit gearbox in place ,( if you have the luxuary of time on your side ) before ordering prop , as the distance between gbox and diff flanges can vary in length , even on the same models , I was told this by Rob at Elite ,
Its a way of life not a hobby

Maybe I should have called but we were discussing my parts needs by email and then it stranded. No problem, suppose they are busy on other projects and I will use Elite.

I got the same advice from Rob and my plan is to get the chassi on the wheels soon, trial fit the engine and measure the distance. Am going to order the gearbox adapter in near future.

If things move on the car is 3-4 weeks or so away from IRS and front subframe fitting.
