#1 S1 4.2 - New Bonnet or Restore Existing ?.

Post by eTypeG » Fri Jul 24, 2015 11:26 am

The bonnet on my S1 4.2 FHC needs restoring, usual issues - rust along the top of the wings and around the arches, a few dings here and there, etc. The question is - Is it best/easier to restore the existing bonnet or buy a new Heritage bonnet ? :D

Unless the original one is really bad it is better to restore the old one. The new ones are such a poor fit it can take a body shop a LOT of hours to get it to fit any where near properly. I have seen them where they have had to cut and shut them in a few places to get the correct shape, especially around the front.

And the entire shape of the Heritage bonnet is not as good s the original because the tools are worn and definition is lost, particularly the centre section hump.

Take a little browse around Chuck's site - it's hard to believe that in the right hands any bonnet is ever beyond redemption!

Surely it's far better (and quite possibly cheaper - Heritage bonnets ain't cheap) to restore the original if you can?

Having said take a look at Chuck's site I notice that there's a very recent blog article on this very subject:

http://www.monocoque-metalworks.com/mai ... -you-need/

As I say, it's hard to believe looking at that article that any bonnet is ever too far gone (in the right hands).
