#1 Long skirt cam followers/tappets

Post by Gfhug » Tue Aug 04, 2015 4:39 pm

Do the long skirt cam followers (C7213/1) have a thicker/thinner/same dimension between the face that the cam strikes and the underside where it pushes against the shim and valve compared to the standard C44010? No-one at SNGB can answer the question till next week.

I've got tappet noise, yet all the clearances are either slightly under or just correct (3 thou inlet, 4 or 5 thou exhaust, vs 4 and 6 thou normal). The guides all look in good order though haven't taken the cams off yet.

Thinking of fitting the long skirt followers as a possible cure, but want to make sure of any words of caution first.

Thanks
Geoff

Geoff,

I am not sure I can answer your question satisfactorily, but as far as I am aware, the standard the E uses long skirt cam followers. When I did my cylinder head, at the time I was only able to obtain the short skirt cam followers with the promise they were lighter.

I had tremendous problems trying to get the correct clearance, in fact any clearance at all. The heads of the cam followers turned out to be considerably thicker than the ones they were replacing.
You will need to mike them; it is unlikely that anyone at SNG will be able to give you a conclusive answer.

The long skirts are likely to be quieter as they will be less prone to rocking in a warn tappet guide.

Hi Geoff,

All the cam followers have the exact same thickness in the area you mention. The exception to this are the followers for the X300 which are thinner. The correct set I (eventually) got from SNG were identical in thickness to the originals they were replacing, ie correct.

I investigated this just a few weeks ago:

Paul and Simon, thank you. Missed your thread Simon or wouldn't have unnecessarily asked this one. Will read through the links, too and be able to better tell which are fitted. I'm hoping they are the C44010, which show in the SNGB catalogue as for the E Type and that by changing can eliminate the tappet noise.

Can't work out what else could be causing the noise.
