Wheel dilemma, correct wire wheels for Series 2 FHC 1970 - ?

Hi all,

My car's current wheels will need re-chroming or replacing, so what are the correct wire wheels for it, should it be flat hub (easy clean type) or should it be curly hub type ?

Would I be better off to re-chrome the existing easy clean type if they are the correct ones or buy new replacements ?

If replacements are the best way to go, who supplies the best quality chromed original type wire wheels ?

From what I've been told re-chroming wire wheels is more expensive than buying the replacements and this seems like a very good offer. And S2 should be the flat hub, I believe. XW472C

Chrome wires look great on the Opalescent colours but for solid colours stoved enamel silver looks better.

Any thoughts on the all stainless steel versions that MWS supply?

I understand that their Chrome wheels are now all fitted with stainless steel spokes now so going with stainless hubs and rims to match seems logical, albeit at an extra cost of ?100 (approx) per wheel.

I believe the stainless spokes look blue'ish and less shiny than the chrome on the hub and rim. All stainless construction would do away with this contrast and should be less likely to flake and rust over time.

You will have chrome bumpers and trim so the stainless steel wheels will look odd next to them - blueish tint vs yellowish tint. One of the joys of a classic car is having all that chrome and s/s wheels are just as difficult to keep clean as chrome.

Either go for all chrome or painted. As Angus says, and he has access to lots of S2's, stoved aluminium would look really good. very period and a refreshing change from all the chrome wire wheel cars.

Try a search on xkedata.com for S2 pictures (hint: search on RHD as most LHD US cars had chrome wires).

I heard good reports of Phil Hallewell but his web site has gone.

Originally they were painted stoved aluminium (Metallichrome Aluminium - ICI: P0-2358). You have a choice of three styles - Standard laced , Competition aka Triple laced or Centre laced - they are all 72 spoke. Down to personal taste but I think the standard laced 5" wheels look best on a road car. Although the flat hubs were standard on the S2 you could opt for the prettier curly hubs. Some more information:

Here you go. 1969 S2 FHC, stoved aluminium wheels. I had to be talked into having them (they were what was on the car originally) but now I far prefer them to chromed:

Mike, if your current wheels are just tatty rather than actually damaged you might want to try the services of Tudor Wheels. They strip, repair (as necessary) and refinish wire wheels in a variety of colours.

I haven't used their services but when I called to discuss the process with them I got a good feeling about them.

I've been contemplating having my slightly tired chrome wires refinished in a darker colour, maybe gunmetal, paint/powder coat but can't decide if that would work with my Opalescent Maroon paintwork??

Tell you what, you can have the tyres we took off the car if you like. As you can see they were in remarkably good nick. Only a couple of thousand miles on them at most - fine as long as you're not too fussed about them being the best part of 30 years old....
