#1 4.2 Flywheel Locking tool

Post by gmunro » Mon Sep 14, 2015 4:41 pm

Hi. Does anybody know where I can obtain a tool for locking the flywheel while refitting flywheel and clutch etc?

OR: are there any suggestions/ideas how to hold the flywheel in position while tightening up the bolts?

Many thanks for any help available.

Kind regards,

If I need to lock the crankshaft I use a right angled piece of angle iron - one say 2" X 3" is amply big enough - which I bolt through one of the backplate holes and engage on the flywheel. If , however, you are refitting the flywheel, then there is no need initially to lock it against rotation - a single bolt serves to stop it rotating and then you do the others up in sequence. Then use the angle iron to stop it rotating whilst you apply final torque

The fasteners for clutch or flywheel attachment are not so big that any harm will come of just putting a socket on the damper nut at the front to hold the crank. Presumably your engine's not on a stand, so I do it resting a socket and tommy bar, or my special big ring spanner, on the deck at the front.
