#1 Type approval etc UK registration of US Import

Post by andrewh » Sun Dec 13, 2015 3:33 pm

As its too miserable in the workshop I thought I would attempt filling out the V55/5 for my US import 3.8. I rather wished I had not bothered!

Anyway only got to BOX 11 Type approval number/category.

Has anyone got any idea what this is plus

Type
Variant
Version
Etc etc

If anyone who has done this can give me a pointer it will save waiting for hours on the phone on Monday to ask DVLA. Why did they close the locals offices?

Thanks chaps

I think you will find that the E type was long before type approval arose ( which I think was post entry to the EEC in 1973)

Hi Andrew,

Alty Ian is your man as he has only just done his. He did tell me it was straight forward. I'll nudge him to have a look on the forum.

I've been nudged, its actually a lot easier than it appears and a lot of boxes remain blank.

I will dig out my forms and if you email me Andrew with your exact questions and box numbers I will advise.

To get an age related plate you complete form V55/5 and the car must be insured and MOT'd to get a plate and provide lots of evidence of the car's identification details, photos best and a heritage certificate as well.

You need identity docs for your self as well with photos etc, see the form guides.

type approval isnt required nor is IVA, they know what an e type is.

Fill in boxes
2,3,5,6,7,8,
9 = "2 axle rigid"
10 colour, keep it brief they ignored my OGS and just put GOLD on the V5
18
27
country - USA
28,29,30,31,32,33
45 the date of original registration if you know it, if not get the year right as thats all they need to decide the year letter
47, 48 49
54

...and leave the rest blank.

Hope this helps. I got mine in about 5 days.

well I have just had my documents returned by DVLA as I had not enclosed ID . BUT, also they don't like the Heritage Certificate and want to know how that Certificate was linked to my car. This is presumably the tail of the Bugatti replica debacle that is currently blowing a gale through the Classic replica market place. I gave them the US registration documents and a valid MOT so what more do they want. Dear old DVLA must love this, tie us all up in knots. What a shower.

I have had a very unfruitful discussion with DVLA customer services who clearly did not know anything about why it was sent back. I think/hope it may have been because I did not send the original Heritage Certificate with the application but a copy. Studying the original it has a much information about the source of the material on the back of the car. Also, I wonder, we will find out after this returned application comes back, whether the fact that the HC is not in my name has anything to do with it. Anyway, i have now enclosed the original HC, and my missing ID (my oversight) and sent it back. Fingers crossed. I will report back asap

Bit strong, that, Andrew. I expect you'd resent it if there were some clerk on tea-break telling his mate "I just got an application from a guy with no ID and a photocopied certificate in someone else's name. What a clot!" Bureaucracy is there to process thousands of documents impersonally, without fear or favour, according to strict criteria handed down by the rule-makers to whom they are responsible.

They are not supposed to start 'thinking' until they have an actionable application. Screening for completeness is step one, I guess, like post office clerks used to first check you had everything, before scrutinizing a tax disc application. It reminds me of when my son grumbled he'd failed his driving test because of a few piffling infractions but one was insufficient observation. From that point on, the examiner wasn't being picky at all (as he saw it) when the fail was being explained to him. The advisories were for his benefit. They were indeed fairly minor, but there was no way back to actually passing the test, because of that one crucial omission.

No biggie, we've all done it, but calling them a 'shower' is like cursing a log-in screen when entering the wrong or incomplete details. Log-ins are SUPPOSED to bounce us ad infinitum until until we get it right. I prefer to do my blushing in private, and sadly I have plenty of practice...

yes well I agree to some extent. As you can probably guess this is not the first time I run around in circles for DVLA and I am always right. They just love making us jump through hoops. I recently retaxed an MGTD I found locally that had been off the road since 1976. They insisted on sending out a sub contractor inspector to check the car, who spent most of the time looking at my cars and drinking coffee and didn't really look at the MG. I then got back a V55. after this I decided to transfer the number plate off the MG and onto my daily. They said that they would have to inspect the MG. This was 1 week after getting my V55 from them following the previous inspection. They said it didn't matter, they would not transfer the number plate without another inspection. OK, I said send me the dates the inspector can call for coffee again. The very next morning in the post arrived my log book for both cars with the numbers transferred. Now tell me they know what they are doing! As for the photocopy of the HC, this is because back in 1979 my father sent a dozen or so valuable Buff log books off to them to comply with the computerisation of records, with very clear instructions to return the buff log books. You guessed it. Nothing, all lost. So we , as a family, are now somewhat reluctant to send the originals of anything. I sent a photo copy of the original MGTD log book and that was fine. What they are is inconsistent. And I also cannot spend the time telling them how to do their job, wait 30 minutes playing with their auto answering machines, trying to remember how I got through the wall last time to speak with a humanoid. Grrr
