What drive belts are people using?
#1 What drive belts are people using?
Hi
Time to make sure I am travelling with a spare drive belt. I have a US Spec LHD OTS. No power steering, no aircon. Simple Alternator, Water Pump tensioner set up, with one belt around all.
The current belt on the car is a Gates XL 7425.
11A1080 13/32" (9.5/10mm) x 43-1/8" (1095mm) Outside Circumference
angle 36?
I ordered a spare from MR, and got something considerably shorter which wouldn't fit at all. There seems to be some info that S1 owners are using a 1100mm belt.
Drayco parts catalogue suggests part number: 15325, which has an effective length of 32.5" - far too short and metric part number 11A0825.
The part number 17260 corresponds to 11A1080, but has an outside length of 42.5" - 5/8" shorter than the existing one.
So I was wondering what parts other's are using, and if the original specifications are available. I've had a good search, but not found anything on the S2 - and as before, the parts from MR seemed totally wrong although the part number corresponded to the parts catalogue.
I'd like to get the set up as close to the original as it should be.

I wanted to buy a pair to carry as spares for a trip to France. I bought a pair of Gates belts through eBay which according to their listing were for an E type but both turned out to be too long by at least 50mm.
I bought another pair but ordered by length and width. They are by Dayco, part numbers 13A0800C (800mm length, 13mm width) and 10A0850C (850mm length, 10mm width). I haven't actually fitted them but I'm happy they are identical to the ones on the car.
Hope this helps.

Hi Brian
Thanks for the information. Out of interest, your 2 belts - do you have aircon or power steering on the car, or is the water pump and alternator driven by fully separate belts. Which one use the tensioner?
I'm interested what the stock setup would have been as it seems there are variances.

Mark,
No aircon or power steering. One belt from crank to water pump with a tensioner and one belt from water pump pulley to the alternator.

Hi Mark......as far as i am aware all S2 non a/c and non p/steering should have 2 drive belts....one from the crank around a tensioner pulley and water pump and one from water pump to alternator...i know that sometimes the 2 belts have been replaced by one......
Sng list the following
S1 4.2......only 1 belt..................C24291
S2..water pump..C28955 alternator..EAC1616
Also there is some debate as to wether the tensioner should be removed......mine in still in place but i know some have removed theirs...its location is above the crank pulley...hope this helps

I also have a lhd S2 car, but with power steering. I would also like to know the correct size for the fan belt (water pump/crank/tensioner as the one fitted to the car has too much slack in it.
Does anyone know the correct part no, or size of this belt.
Also does anyone the benefit of removing the tensioner ?

Hi give SNG a call....they probably wont give the size but will know the part no....re the tensioner.....for whatever reason some have found it dificult to replace the crank/waterpump belt so they removed the tensioner and used one belt for crank/water/alternator and adjusted it by the alternator bracket...posibly because in the past they did not have the correct belts......is your tensioner working

Thanks.....yes the tensioner appears to be working ok, my first thought when I noticed the loose belt was that it had seized.
I have a box full of misc, but new looking belts which where in the boot of the car when I bought it last year, along with a load of other random items of old trim, I've got a day of E-Type fiddling tomorrow, so I'll do a little trial and error.

Mark,
I've just started searching for replacement belts. I have a US Sept 1970 OTS, with ps and a/c. After (at last) finding out how easy it is to post pictures here are the 4 different belt sizes that are currently installed on my car. (I will see if the pic shows up with my serviceprovider)

Both tensipners are still in place, I believe both to still be working. The belts are of US, I assume local namibg conventions will differ to these. That is all the data I could read off the old belts.

Wow! A chalk-board diagram posted to a forum via Photobucket. Quite a contrast in technology.
Sorry, can't add anything to this subject, but couldn't resist the comment ;-)
