Don't see it could do any harm. FYI the MGB tanks now supplied by Moss are galvanised...at least mine was.

I would say best to get a brand new tank done rather then try to galvanize an old one.

If you then paint it you might need a primer suitable for the zinc coating.

Can't see the need to galvanise a fuel tank but trying it on a used tank would probably be of little value. It would have to be scrupulously clean for the galvanic reaction to work and the welded seam is going to be a pig to do. Ditto a new tank - you could never be sure how clean the inside is unless it is manufactured with galvanising in mind. The replacement tank in my OTS is now 20 years old and not causing a problem but I guess if you plan to keep the car for 50 years it may be a consideration.

You need to avoid all forms of tank sealant because the ethanol in modern fuels causes it to soften and break loose. Several companies claim their sealant is immune but none of done any long term tests (10 years+) to prove it. Avoid!

Best way is to keep the tank brimmed when putting the car away for long periods and not worry. If it starts to be a problem after 30+ years then ?320 for a new one seems like good value.

David
Interesting point you make about ethanol...I used the POR-15 system on my 911, available through Frosts's and so far (7 years on the road) there have been no issues...yet..!

Things like POR15 claim to be "ethanol resistant" but not 'ethanol proof' - big difference! Many watches are classed as water resistant which means the will OK when washing your hands, in rain or being splashed. On the other hand a watch classed as waterproof means you can swim with it on; how deep is another matter.

All this is a big problem for motorbike owners as ethanol will soften and dissolve fibreglass which many tanks are made of. Try a few biker Forums and you will see the problem as initially they thought putting tank sealant in there would be the answer, but sadly not. Steel or alloy tanks with no sealant seem to be the way to go.

Just keep an eye on it and watch for fuel discoloration in the filter bowl. Also drain the tank every few years and remove the sump to check if there is any goo in it.

Not tried it myself but this stuff might be worth investigating: http://www.zinga-uk.com/product-range/zinga It is a cold applied galvanising system and will not be affected by ethanol or pretty much anything else!
