#1 Oil pressure testing

Post by Piscator » Tue Mar 22, 2016 9:52 pm

My S2 oil pressure gauge reads low eg on start-up from cold less than 20psi.
I would like to check what the pressure really is.
Could anyone recommend a suitable oil pressure test kit and what size of thread should the adapter be?

Many thanks,
John L

A lot of people just put a T fitting under the sender unit and fit a gauge there.

I think the thread is 1/4 NPT but I am not 100% sure.

Yep....should work a treat. Not intended for permanent connection...just remove the pressure sender and pop that on.....if it still shows 20 psi that would be a case for concern.

#5 oil pressure test

Post by Piscator » Sat Mar 26, 2016 5:41 pm

Gentlemen,
Many thanks for your advice. I've ordered through eBay a pressure test kit. However, I have gone for one with a dial of 0 to 140psi rather than 0 to 500, as it should be easier to read.

I understood that the replacement gauge and sender from JEC had been discontinued in 2014. However, the gentleman I contacted from their spares department said the last batch received had a metric thread and they were trying to resolve the issue.

After my search, eBay e-mailed me with other items I might be interested in, including an E-type oil pressure gauge (re-furbished) for ?200 :!:

Thanks again,
Regards
John L

M7C Wilkinson sell a mechanical gauge plus all the fittings although I suggest you avoid the braided pipe and get the cheaper plastic one. Full details on this mod in the Upgrades Forum: viewtopic.php?t=173

Dear all,
To set your mind at rest, I have no intention of spending ?200 on a gauge. My plan of campaign is to check what the real oil pressure is. I hope that the actual pressure is satisfactory and that either the gauge or the sensor is faulty, in which case, I have to decide whether to wait for the JEC kit or go for the capillary one from Wilkinsons.

On the other hand, if the true reading is low.........

Thanks for your inputs

The JEC combo has been out of stock for about two years so don't hold your breath. The mechanical gauge is the way to go IMHO.

Hi john.. the senders are notorious for not working correctly.....the changing oil pressure causes a change in the output resistance of the sender.....when my sender was outputting low i added resistance in the cct until the meter reading was the same as the test gauge i used to determine the correct pressure.....ended up with about 120 ohms added in the Cct.. .works fine now if you need details pm me Steve
