Interior problems

Hi,
My project is moving on - which means into new problems :D
On the left side I have difficulty understand how the side trim is fastened. It sits on the upper side and I thought it was supposed to go inside the dashboard wall so it will be held that way but it is no room. Enclose picture from my car and the sticky factory. Any good advise on this?


Then I have difficulty to get the radio console to fit. It is supposed to be a quite straight line from the dashboard mid section leaning slightly forward in the top down through the console. However, the mid section of the dashboard need a lot of space under when open it to reach the fuse boxes and it conflicts with the radio console. Also it is difficult to get the radioconsole further in as it drops outside the plate of the gir handle. I have a fibreglass cover over the gearbox which may never have been mounted before and since I haver never taken the car appart I do not know how it looked like. I enclose the sticky factory picture of a similar design.

Seems to be the case on most E-Type's. Fix is to use two thumb screws to retain the indicator strip. http://www.shear-loc.com/8thumbscrew.htm - two knurled 4mm thread ones are required. You only need to use the two outer fixing holes and removing the indicator strip is quick and easy.

David and others : I adopted your fix using two of the original screws and epoxy gluing a rubber tap washer over the screwhead. This gave sufficient purchase just to unscrew/replace using finger torque only. About 15 secs to get the strip off, and perhaps twice as long to replace because you have to find the pesky holes !

Incidentally, as far as the original query is concerned about the side trims under the screen corners , there should on each side be a chromed piece in the rough shape of a curved picture rail hook, with a trimmed triangular piece ( the hypotenuse of which is also curved ) which goes on with it and is secured by three screws with chrome bezels

Would they have been fitted to a 61 car ? My car is a 62 & there was no sign of them. Trimmer advised me to fit a small piece of vinyl between the dash & the hockey stick trim to cover up any metal beneath.

Neil : don't know the answer to that, I'm afraid . The pictures I have of 9600HP for instance are in black / white and are inconclusive. Perhaps someone with the originality book(s) will know

Neil, on '61 cars (and '62 like mine) definitely there is no chrome+plastic trim at the ends of the dashboard. But indeed there is a piece of vinyl on each side which is perforated to pass the two studs then glued to the dashboard. Should be long enough to go under the hockey stick, thus hiding any metal underneath.

Thanks. I have it exactly as your description on my car. Just hadn't noticed the chrome finisher on later cars before. Not noticed it on my later cars either but they're in storage.

Hi,
My centre console is 'tight' up against the perspex dash strip. I was told it was due to the thicker modern carpet and sound proofing on top of the gearbox tunnel.
My car is slightly later to yours and I have the end of dash chrome and wedge shaped trims.

I will dive into this in the weekend and see where I end. I may have to widen the mid console as also my carpet is quite thick.
Seems to be two quite fiddeling jobs.
Be prepared that I may have to get some more assitance :D
