Post by caveman » Sat May 14, 2016 9:10 pm

After trying to locate the final part to my toolkit recently, that of the nesting tubular box spanner set, I had a reply from Jaguar E Type Tool guy suggesting I sell my individual items and buy his complete S1 toolkit 'starting' at ?2000

Really! Is this the world we E Type owners now find ourselves in or am I just getting older!

I'm residing myself to purchasing a repro set now. Any suggestions. Thank you.

Cant really see the point myself of paying these inflated prices caused by ourself unfortunatly these tool kits and original jacks are never going to be used and just hidden away in the boot......better idea would be to hang them on tbe wall, at least you could look at them......hold out you will find some one day.....

Thanks Steve, they're definately up there with Lord Lucan, Shergar and the Holy Grail, oh, and the Loch Ness Monster!

Just moving the wife's antiques out of the display cabinet to fit my tool kit in

I agree with Steve. At the risk of ruffling feathers :D , really, what's the point? If your original toolkit happens to have survived to the current day, lucky you... but otherwise?

They're of little or no practical purpose, you'll spend time emptying your wallet and tracking bits down - and then what? It sits under the boot panel out of sight. The only time anyone's going to know you've got one is if someone comes up to your and says "Lovely car, mate" and then you then make them feel slightly nervous and uncomfortable by insisting not on taking them for a drive, but in opening up the back of your car so that you can rummage around and proudly drag out your toolkit (whereupon if they're really that fussed they'll probably highlight some item that is in fact incorrect and really spoil your day.... )

And value-wise, surely the net increase in the value of your cars is... errr... exactly whatever the going rate for a decent toolkit is? Put it another way, imagine the conversation:

"Lovely car, mate. I'd like to buy it."

"Fine the cost is <<insert large number here>>"

"Great..... But does it have a toolkit?"

"No, but if you're that fussed you can have fun putting one together for around a grand, or there's even a chap selling complete ones to save you the effort for around two grand. Tell you what, I'll knock a grand off the price then it's up to you."

"Great. Done. Pleasure doing business with you."

"And you."

...And whilst we're on the question of pursuit of originality and the 'full E-type experience', what's with all the cars parked up at Bicester with modern road atlases or - and I shudder slightly as I write this - SatNavs?? Come on now, you know who you are :D. The only thing acceptable in an E-type is a correct, period-authentic, leather-bound John Bartholomew...

PS And if you're going to go to the time and trouble of fitting a heritage tax disc, don't go and let the side down by putting it in a 'Direct Line' tax disc holder or one that displays a website address....

SatNavs must be properly fitted into a purpose made hole in the dash, not using a suction pad on the windscreen, and with a proper USB socket for power and Blueteeth for the phone.

My car now has pockets in the back of the seats for the latest AA Road Atlas. All I need is a netting pocket on the side of the gearbox tunnel and somewhere to hold a paper coffee cup and I'm good to go toouring......

Reversing camera will have to wait until next year.

(Some of this is true!)

Some options here: viewtopic.php?t=6571

Richard Smith is working on producing the correct box spanners with markings which should take some heat out of the market. He did the same with Shelley jacks and Metallifacture conversion kits (buy and XJ6 jack for next to nothing, add the repro integrated handle and shoe).

Having an almost complete tool kit I do feel maybe I should offer up parts of it an item at a time. All the proper Jaguar logos on the spanners, etc.

You're in need of a correct box spanner to complete your set, I have one, so what'll the price be?

I could make quite a bit to help pay for more useful items, a new set of Michelins for example. 8)

#9 Tool kit madness

Post by cactusman » Mon May 16, 2016 4:11 pm

I happened upon an old classic car tool roll complete with an eclectic collection of spanners and the like. Cost me ?40! Lives in the spare wheel and never once has it been used.
If you do want a tool roll worth looking for a non Jaguar one. They are a tiny fraction of the Looney prices listed for Jag ones!!!!!.....and I bet you never use it.

Concours people want the full nested set of four with correct markings but stick it/them on eBay and see what happens.

4 nesting would be the Holy Grail of sets, I'll settle for 3 that nest at 6" and one 7" plug spanner. I never thought I'd see the day I caught David out. Haha.

Hands up, I have a satnav in my car and unless they are going to produce an old atlas with speed camera warnings in it, it's going to stay there😀.
I do not think i would like to navigate with a 1962 road atlas these days as we do not have the very polite RAC/AA man to salute me and give me directions if I get lost. I also think I have lost my key to the RAC/AA phone boxs. How many roads would be missing on an 1962 road maps these days?

And you still managed to meet us at the wrong service station and take the wrong exit from the roundabout!! Haha. All in jest Tony, it was a great day out. Ian should have some super pictures of you in the rain on the way back that I took.

Simon, I only missed the service station and roundabout turn off because they did not exist in my period 1962 sat nav.🤗.
By the way I have sorted out my gapping on the bonnet after you mentioned it. It is now 100 % better but took some doing. As you make one adjustment, three others go out.

Haha! Glad you sorted the bonnet though Tony, a minor niggle on an otherwise super looking car.

Generally speaking all the towns remain in the same place though....
