#1 Fan motor coating

Post by Monkeyfinger » Tue Aug 02, 2016 5:40 pm

As part of my ongoing stripping and fettling, I was going to spray the twin motors satin black. However, I think the motors have been casually sprayed in the past and looking on their underside which hasn't been off the brackets before, the original finish looks to have been a dark grey stove enamel (or hammerite). Does this tally with others? The end plates are smooth aluminium I think, so those can be wire brushed. Interested to know what others have found.

Rustoleum Hammered Grey 7214830. The Hammerite silver and Rusoleum silver are too light.

I agree the Hammerite silver is too light. My fans had suffered from the elements and the only colour match I could get was from behind the rubber grommets/washers. I also used the dark grey Rust-oleum mentioned above, for comparison with the silver:

I did find the Rustoleum product effervesced once sprayed and caused a lot of bubbling at the surface rather than getting the hammered finish. I manage to overcome this by heating the motor housing in a low oven (60 degrees C) and immersing the paint can in hot water for 15+ mins.

ps I think both the round bodied wiper motor and fan motors should be the darker grey colour

I'm struggling to find a good UK stockist for this - the earlier link for Buck and Hickman was good but I don't have a trade account. Other than that it seems to be a few online suppliers with exorbitant delivery charge for 1 can.

Actually just found and ordered this from Amazon

I will report back on the colour once I have given it a try. Good price though...

I am currently renovating the wiper motor on my 62 3.8 FHC and am unsure what the correct finish should be for the base plate with 4 holes for attachment to the body in the recess area.
After dismantling there is some evidence on the back that the plate may have been zinc coated but all reference material I can find seems to indicate it may have been finished in silver Hammerite on the front facing surface.
Any clarification would be much appreciated.
