#1 I suspect very many cars fall foul of these criteria

Post by PeterCrespin » Sun Aug 07, 2016 9:47 am

In light of the VIN-less car thread, I was looking to see if my former cars were listed as stolen (I can't see that they are). If anyone knows a free way of checking I'd love to know how.

Meanwhile, during my searches I came across the link below and it got me wondering how many people have used exclusively old parts when rebuilding their E, prior to seeking a UK registration? None, I'll bet. This seems to be a more draconian interpretation than the points system or the recent Bugatti kerfuffle, or does the points system still apply?

HPI check should reveal any nasties but it is far from free. Doubt there is a free one. As to your bet...I rekon you would win. Anyhow nobody in their right mind would use 25 year old tyres, rubbers, hoses etc in a re build....I would guess even the DVLA would allow some flexibility and apply common sense......I recall other threads discussing when a re build becomes essentially a new vehicle.....there be a can of worms....

I read the gov.uk text as a guideline to omit lumps, or other custom made rigs, from being registered as historic. I read 'original components' as being engine, framework, suspension asf, and not as down to every single bolt, hose or tyre. Hence the necessity for the appropiate club to state whether the car reflects a marque or not. Of course, letter for letter one could read in to the text only a tyre of a mininum of 25 years of age would be accepted, which cannot seriously have been the intention.

Yes - it applies to first time registrations of 'reconstructed' vehicles, not restorations of previously registered vehicles. Perhaps unsurprisingly the DVLA demands some sort of evidence/satisfaction that the assemblage of parts hammered together in some bloke's shed does indeed bear some resemblance to the Lamborghini Countach he now claims it to be

Restoring a previously registered E-type using overpriced reproduction parts that don't fit and don't do the job they're designed to do will continue to be perfectly fine though...
