I had a fly-off in my TR4. Floor mounted like a normal handbrake. For fast take offs, you could just slap the handle and it would "fly off"

Could be an good anti theft device.....most theives woukd be trying to release the handbrake by pressing the button in but as they pull and press it just puts it on harder

The underdash umbrella type handle was not a flyoff at all but was a " twist and release" type. A flyoff requires you to apply the brake by pulling up on the lever and then setting it in position by pushing the button at the top. To release, you just pull it back the merest fraction without touching the button and it then fully releases

Well Carsten, since you DID consult some books I cannot complain, but always go to the source, if possible. Your official J38 parts book shows no rubber at all, although the extended handle does look ready for one. I guess on cars with the wrong or missing foam insulation it might even help against a hot lever. 'Echt Leder though, please, not Plastik oder Fruchtgummislangen, :-).

Meanwhile, Chris is experienced with many British Cars, including those with fly-off handbrakes. He gives a good explanation but it doesn't apply to any of the 4 E-type LWB models. These operate just like the SWB hand brakes (push to release), it's just that instead of having a small button inside the handle tube, they use a thin cap over the end of the tube.

Chris was also extremely generous with his time recently and spent several hours helping with his Rover P5 Coupé as wedding car AND top-notch chauffeur to my son's wedding. Even after some wedding photographer delay, which dragged out the appointment, he refused payment and said if I insisted then it should go to charity, which it did. A true gentleman.

Peter : it was my pleasure, and I hope the day went as well as it could do for all concerned. Thanks for the photo - even though it shows that I am getting ever more bent !! Incidentally, I have now discovered where the dell is in Port Sunlight , which is apparently a universal spot for photographers to take their subjects , and i can see why

Throw it in the bin and forget it . It has absolutely nothing to do with Jaguar at all

Yes- I just posted it to show you what I fell for- if you find this on the handle, its glued on, looks used, is grey as the rest of the car, and the handle has an indention to take it- who would not have thought it's a factory part ?

Will ditch it and never look back...
