#1 steering rack removal

Post by spotdoc67 » Tue Nov 01, 2016 7:16 pm

Hi
I have a LHD 1969 FHC e type
it has just gone through the MOT with an advisory of excessive play in the steering rack,
my question is...what is involved in replacing the old rack?
My practical skills are OK.
Are there any good pictorial guides around?
Also, where should I look for a replacement rack or should I get the old one refurbished

thanks

Tom

Before removing the rack have a good look and see exactly where the play is as it may not be in the rack itself.
There are 2 splined fittings top and bottom of the steering column that have uni joints in them and these can contribute greatly to movement.

there is play in the rack itself which is most obvious on the passenger side. I'm guessing that it could be the bush in the rack on that side that is worn.
What is the best way to get the rack out.
Does the rad need to be removed or can you slide it out once the steering column is pulled up?

You can get the rack out with the radiator in; a bit of a fiddle and easier with 2 people.

Hmmmmm.... Sounds familiar.

Before ripping the rack out, just check something.
Grab the passenger side steering control arm firmly and yank it up and down.
If you can detect (hear or feel) play at the steering rack end, loosen the rubber gaitor and slide it down the control arm exposing the ball and socket at the end of the rack.
Repeat the yanking action, this time feeling where the play actually is.
If it is the ball joint and not the rack, you can adjust the play out.
Check the manual for this process.
Cost, one tab washer and a few moments after to check wheel alignment.

Yes, what Chris said. This might be an easy fix for you if all the movement is at one end.

Hello again
sorry for the long delay in this thread
I've been sitting on this for a while
MOT is due again and I've had a look at the problem today
the play is definitely in the rack itself and I guess it must be the tube bush that has failed.
Is it possible to replace these bushes with the rack in place or will the rack need to come out for repair?

thanks

Tom

Nope you'll need to take it out.
