#1 Water pump belt

Post by Freddie116 » Mon Nov 14, 2016 10:50 am

Tried posting on an old thread about this but i don't think anyone is looking at it. Basically trying to replace the belt on my 65 series 1 4.2 and it is coming up short. I see there has bee some discussion of this issue before and comments that different manufactured bents have slightly different lengths despite being the same part number. The one I have is from sng. It appears shorter but also the groove in the W is shallower. Any tips? Is one from anywhere else any better a fit?

Thanks.

It should be a Duplex belt (W grooves) part number C24291 and 1100 mm in length. It is different from the 3.8 (1010mm), S1.5 and S2 car versions. Measure the length.

Yes. That's the correct part and the one I have but on an old thread there was discussion of different suppliers selling belts with the same part no but slightly different fit. Either way, this one won't go on!

Do you have the original alternator and pulley fitted or are they something different? Run a piece of string around the pulleys, measure the length and report back here. If it comes up more than 1100mm then something is odd.

Ok. Will do but the old belt, which is clearly a bit stretched from age still has the same part number just visible on it. However it is noticeably longer and the indentation on the v is wider than the new one. If you look on a previous posting thread from 2012 on here about the same subject there was an unfinished discussion where someone had the same problem and was going to check relative merits of different suppliers' belts.

Does it go inside or outside the idler wheel below the water pump?

Outside. The idler wheel is there to tension the belt and reduce the need for adjustment. You can run the engine with the idler wheel removed as it merely adds to the noise. Nice in period but given the care and attention E-Type's now receive it is pretty pointless.

Thanks. Have tried fitting it by taking the alternator off and putting the belt on but can't then reattach the alternator. Have rung sng and they re looking into it. Have tried to attach pic below but says it's too large

Got it fitted. But not the one I bought from sng. I thought I'd buy one from John Gordon which turned out to be different (included old c suffix in code). This was tight but went on with the alternator detached then reattached. That wouldn't work with the sng one. I'm yet to start her (the battery is now flat) but all appears well. I will be returning the sng one now.
