Ian, agreed, with your car, all bets are off! My 65 car is mounted the opposite way to yours.

#22 Period Factory Heavy-Weight Accessory ?

Post by rfs1957 » Mon Jul 18, 2016 4:27 pm

I ended up with this bit of stamped bean-can from a Usual Suspect, see right, and couldn't bring myself to fit it when I thought about the loads I had sometimes put on it with the over-centre toggle in the middle of the hood, and the fact it essentially holds the windscreen in ................ the later version shown by other posters seems to have a hole rather than this slot, and whilst I can see more and more clearly why the car was so cheap to make, the botch from the PO began to look more and more attractive.

Image

However, as luck would have it I came across what I believe may have been a "period accessory" - judging from the difficulty I had in squeezing in a nut and lock-washer into the gap in the bracket, where an extra 20 thou in height would have made all the difference, I can only assume this was a genuine Jaguar part ?

Image

With 4 x threaded inserts pulled into the 4 existing holes around the wiper-aperture, the 80-thou MS plate fitted perfectly after the usual end-user-R+D tweaks, and will may have the added benefit of quietening the wiper mechanism.

Image

Not being much of a concours candidate, I reckon I'm not likely to hear any sucking of teeth, and the hood toggle does at least now shut with a more reassuring twang.

Rory

Nobody seems to have answered your query about the "hockey stick" trim panels. The holes drilled in the back of the panels are for the usual sprung metal trim clips used on the door panels etc. There should be two matching holes in the screen pillars and one on the return panel adjacent to the dashboard.
I'm assuming you don't have these in which case you will need to drill the pillars. I had a similar problem in that there were only two holes in the bodywork and three on the trim panel. Even with the requisite number of clips and holes the "co-efficient of attachment" was marginal in my case. The passengers panel used fall off and swivel round the grab handle if you were too enthusiastic going over speed bumps. This was causing the passenger(wife) to have a few extra, sorry new, grey hairs. I ended up using very strong double sided gel strip to stick things together. Result no more swinging panels.
You might be lucky and the profile of the trim might exactly match the body panel so the clips will fully engage in their corresponding holes. I think this was the problem with mine- the profiles didn't match very well at all.

Cheers

Thanks for that Alan.

My LH one actually sits flat and snug without any clips because it has always been trapped at the top just by the thickness of the vinyl between the chrome capping on the top of the windscreen post - when you tighten the side-screw it clamps just the vinyl because there is a cut-away at that point in the steel hockey-stick - and at the bottom it's held by the grab-handle fixings. So I don't think I'll bother with the clips.

On the RHS, unaware that there should be clips, I've cheated and added one small domed chromed CSK self-tapper and a chrome cup-washer near the bottom corner. One day when I re-do the whole cockpit I'll do it correctly ..........

I've actually got the windscreen out again anyway, to try and improve on the lower chrome trim fitting, and am going to try ordering both the chrome and the windscreen rubber from Hutsons on the basis that they actually fit the things as well as selling them.

More on the hockey sticks, will post pictures later, but like Alan my car has just two holes in the pillars and three in the hockey sticks, essentially an extra one in the middle. Funny, the two holes in the body dont really line up at all with the hockey stick, but they're close enough to make you think they might !

Has anyone got a picture of the hockey sticks fitted, would love to know where the lower edge is meant to sit in relation to the shell edge ?

Mine were glued way lower, I am guessing that if fitted correctly the vinyl on the side cheek return will neatly cover the lower shell edge where the door cutaway begins, and that I just need to check that the top of the hockey sticks are of the right length to meet the chrome pillar cappings ?

This is today's job, have I got any willing assistants out there, or are you all on a beach somewhere ?!

Follow-Up :

These are the tops, Left on LHS, Right on RHS - one has been bent, anyone know which is right and/or easier to trim ? Unfortunately don't have screen and cappings in place at the moment ..........

Image

Image

It looks as if this would be the best position in a vertical sense, with the vinyl just trapped between the shell and the return on the lower edge of the trim panel.

Image

The Sticky Fit pictures for the 3.8 suggest that the trim around here was a bit naff from new, especially the interface between the cheeks and the dash - I'm hoping to subtly improve it here without it standing out screaming as a "mod", always hard on an E-Type.

Any observations and advice based on experience most welcome.

Well - Some Fell On Stony Ground.

There must be a lot of you on the beach, that's all I can say.

Never mind, keep your advice, I managed just fine and will post the pictures whilst you're rinsing the sand from between your toes.

I get it, the NORTHERN owners USE their cars around now, so have no time for technical issues, whereas around here we've decided it's too hot to go outside so we take ours to bits instead.

These issues with dash-trim, windscreen trim, hockey-stick panels etc are all interconnected and interdependent so I've started them up as a new thread -

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9294&p=72574&hilit=dash#p72574

- again on Technical rather than Series 1, since they are probably common in some ways to all the cars.

#28 Hockey-Stick clips ?

Post by rfs1957 » Thu Dec 15, 2016 6:18 pm

Prize for the idiot of the week here.

I had imagined in my naivety that the clips that were meant to hold the hockey-sticks on - and which I'd never seen - would fit in the holes in the hockey sticks, and clip neatly into the immediately opposite holes on the door pillars ?

That I'd carefully transferred with a conical-headed pin ?

Image

Seemed logical, no ?

Now I've got the effing clips I realise they're offset !! Have I got the wrong clips, please say yes ?

Or confirm I've cocked the alignment up and will have to drill again .............. and what's the proper way of working out this deliberate misalignment between the holes ?

Hi Rory....those ofset clips were used on the door cards, rear side panels under and behind the rear quarterlight windows..and various other places....if you search through the parts catalogues it does shown in the diagrams both in the knowledge base, SNG web site and there catalogue what clip to use where...

Hi Rory...just be aware that there are 2 different sizes of that clip...at least there are on my 2+2....they are also used on my car on the trim panel inside below the rear hatch opening
