#1 IRS Mount shim/spacers

Post by Julian.P » Sat Dec 17, 2016 9:35 pm

I have now collected my series 1.5 E Type, I acquired the car as a stalled restoration project from Classic Jaguar Texas, the car has been loosely assembled for transportation, first problem I have found is the rear IRS is literally held in place with a couple of bolts, there's no sign of any spacers between the 4 off mounts and body and I can't find any in the boxes of parts supplied with the vehicle, my question is what's the correct method of calculating the number of shims to be used between mount and body.

Julian.

The traditional wisdom is one on either side of the box section so you need 8 in total. AFAIK they do not have a role in alignment.

Hi Andrew many thanks for your reply, if they have no effect on suspension geometry I assume there purpose is to shim out the slack between chassis rail and mount.

Hi Julian...yes exactly.......sometimes the shims can be stuck to the bodywork and not loose so they csn be overlooked....especiall if there is underseal on the rals...........just use enough to evenly pack out any gaps

Hi Steve yes that makes sense, I have seen some slotted spacers on a you-tube video, my thinking is have a load laser profiled as they work out at costing penny's to manufacture.

Hi Julian...you wont need loads....as Andrew said ideally one on each mount each side will be 8 but the cars ive worked on only had one per mount fitted on the inside so 4 http://www.sngbarratt.com/ProductDetail ... 43b898&l=7
