#21 Re: Clutch release
Hi All - Peter H again,
Get this: the additional standalone bearing from SNG (marked C23572, but in an AP box) is 0.9mm taller than bearing in the AP three-piece kit (AP code KT9702).
Would you believe it - mystery solved - but beware!
Meanwhile, I have the "new" spring clutch installed as it did indeed fit.
Regards, Peter.

The release bearings are indeed different as you say.
HD3306 - for the early spring clutch on the 3.8
C235752 - for the later diaphragm clutch on S1 4.2 onwards
This was discussed in a previous thread. I had a similar problem, but it was the fitting of C235752 to a early spring clutch that caused it. The conclusion at the time was not to mix and keep the correct set. It may be the slave cylinder push rod is the item that is the incorrect length.

Is the KT9702 clutch kit for the diaphragm clutch or for the spring clutch? If it's the diaphragm kit, and you solved the fit issue for the diaphragm unit with the SNG bearing, I'm curious why you're using the coil spring clutch as the consensus seems to be that the diaphragm is the better choice.Peter Harrison wrote:Hi All - Peter H again,

Also, 0.9 mm at the bearing face doesn't translate to much distance at the end of the actuating lever.

There were previous comments in another thread that the spring clutch was the better system, but jaguar changed to the diaphragm on the basis of cost, so I personally am unsure if a real consensus has been reached.

Well, it's larger diameter, so depends what you're after I suppose. In any case the specifics of the throw out bearing differences and which kit it applies to is of interest, at least to me.

0.9 mm is of no consequence.64etype wrote: In any case the specifics of the throw out bearing differences and which kit it applies to is of interest, at least to me.
You would expect that much graphite to be missing after maybe 10,000 miles or less (0.036" / 36 thou?). On the other hand, 0.9 cm (i.e. 9.0 mm) is about right for the offset difference between the two styles of TOB. Are we discussing a typo here?

Yes, I thought the same thing....if he was talking about comparison to one in a diaphragm clutch kit.

I have read, and contributed to this thread, with a feeling of near disbelief. I don't know what someone has done to Peter's car before he had it, but the fitting of a spring clutch ( which went out with the Ark and creates an appallingly heavy pedal ) to an S2, is butchery of an almost unbelievable degree - and I cannot think what Uryk was doing supplying a spring clutch, unless he didn't realise it was a 4.2 litre car. Anyway, without wishing to rattle anyone's cage, i shall say it now - the only sensible thing to do is to put this car's clutch back to the proper specification, with a diaphragm clutch and matching release bearing. Anything else is creating a potentially very very expensive hostage to fortune

By the way, I looked up AP clutch kit 9702 and it is for a diaphragm clutch. Given that the original poster was alarmed about the offset difference between the SNG throw out bearing and the one in this kit, it is logical to assume that he meant cm, and not mm. I hope someone has contacted the AP company about this TOB discrepancy in the kit. Dang nightmare if someone installed it in a car without a prior check.

Hi All - me again,
Just to be clear: Uryk's new AP diaphragm clutch was indeed supplied with the wrong bearing - very disappointing. Uryk is an expert and appreciates this now - it is just that we all didn't think to consider this possibility that seriously until I ordered the correct bearing from SNG and noticed the 9mm (typo indeed - sorry) height difference.
Meanwhile, whilst this was all in doubt, a new spring clutch was fitted and the engine re-installed. Now the car is back together I suspect I will only fit the diaphragm clutch next time the engine is out. Hopefully never.
The restoration was done in 1999 at Wat-Jag (JEC Feb 2000) and the move to a spring clutch was an active decision at that time. No complaints about the spring clutch after 18 years/30,000 miles so it can't be that bad.
Now I finally have the chance to properly try out Uryk's gearbox! If the gearbox is as good as his service and communication - I will not be disappointed.
Regards, Peter.

Thanks for the follow up. Now, has anyone investigated why that AP kit had the wrong bearing...and followed up with AP if its an error on their part? If they are shipping kits with the wrong bearing, that is a serious issue...as you know.

I doubt AP are in the wrong. If you read the thread there are lots of errors of supply, fitment, comprehension and reporting that are nothing to do with AP. I expect someone merely scored two own goals, or maybe a hat-trick, and AP were/are blameless if it was an intact AP kit(s).
Never know unless you ask, I suppose...
