#1 Kelsey Hayes bellows replacement

Post by peters3103 » Sat Apr 29, 2017 11:15 pm

Hello from downunder,

I need to replace the split bellows on my Kelsey Hayes unit. Can this be done in situ or does the whole unit need to be removed. If so, not looking forward to it! Any tips would be welcomed.

Cheers,
Pete

I reckon it'll come out.
There's 4 studs holding it to the backing plate and one bolt through the actuating arm.
I've just rebuilt one for the 3.8 I'm currently restoring. Not a difficult job.
You can get just the bellows from the usuals, or a whole kit from America. The KH was used on 1958 to 1960 Thunderbirds.

Thanks Andrew, just what I wanted to hear! I did read your post re your rebuild. I'll have a closer look and see if I can disassemble it.
Cheers.

Having read the factory manual it says to remove the pedal box before removing the bellows from it. Has anyone actually removed the bellows with pedal box in situ?
Thanks
Pete

Check out the Forum KB as there is a link to a series of articles describing how to overhaul the unit.

The 'Knowledge Base' is our repository of just about everything we collectively know about the E-Type. It is the first heading on the Home page and within it is a treasure trove of information:

Once you are in Aladdin's Cave head for the thread at the bottom of the page 'Technical Information & Documentation' and you will find what you seek

Whilst you are there explore some of the other threads - some fascinating stuff.

Fantastic David, plenty of good info there and at first glance it does in fact advise that the bellows unit is removable from the car without removing the pedal box. Excellent news.
