I recently had a good break through with a car and number plate.

I could not believe my luck in finding a restoration project - 1965 Mk 1 Austin Cooper S in New Zealand (exported from new) and reimported it a couple of years ago. (great fun tracking the container vessel over its voyage) but then held my breath at the docks while the container was first opened up - would it actually be there!

The reg number in NZ was HP2848, and thought it would be an appropriate link to see if that reg was available in the UK. No luck.

Next thought, what would be an interesting reg plate to find and decided ACS 65C would be accurate and subtle. I tried a few of the well known retailers of reg no's to see if they might have it. They said it would cost around 2 grand to obtain it with a menu of prices for search, registration etc.

I then tried the DVLA who explained that the number had never been issued and the only way to buy it would be at Auction and they would let me know when the auction would be held. A few months later I received the notification, the bidding started at £250 and I was chuffed to finally secure it all in with VAT etc for £450!

Nearly thirty years ago when I started working for myself, I just needed to get a couple more years out of my car. I wasn't going to run up a debt to blow seed capital on a had to look prosperous rather than skint and driving an old banger, but certainl. The then-current version of XJ6 had come out a few years earlier so I went for CRE571N and they told me the same as you. They!d come out pushed and pushed to bid more than 250 quid, inclusive. I said nobody would pay for CRE 571 N, so I got it as the one and only bidder. CRE 521N was the same, but by then it wasn't so easy to get a plate made with 'modified' spacing etc.Having that number meant the Jag still looked current for several years.

There are some great plates around but also some ridiculously contrived ones.
My favourite, which I haven't seen for forty years or so, is a white Rolls Royce with the number 1 UP.
That just came be beaten.

Anyone recall Paul Raymond's E-Type wearing FU2? Or Steve Parrish's car which carried PEN15? And let's not forget all those Pimlico Plumbers vans running around London sporting numbers like B1DET and F1USH.

Is that for real? I knew someone who worked for what is now the DVLA, and they refused to issue "GUV" because it was in poor taste. PEN 15 and FU 2 must definitely be out!
Saw a bread van in Brighton with BRE 4D. Anthony Crook had, or has, 100 MPH on his Bristol.
I used to see a girl near me in Horsham driving round with D1. That must be worth a few bob.

Certainly PEN 15 and FU 2 were issued in period. I remember seeing PEN 15 on an old American car hand painted with murals driving passed Bounds Green tube station in the early 1970's. PEN 15 is still around; can be yours for £100k: https://www.regtransfers.co.uk/info/pen15

Many years ago I saw a Jaguar S-Type, the modern US Ford derived car, parked in a Salisbury trading estate. It wore the number S 7 YPE.

As for PEN15 (or it may have been PEN1S) this was owned by Steve Parrish former motorcycle racer and truck racer and current motorcycle race pundit on TV.

Agreed, but it's only effective on a 250 GTO and only around 39 cars qualify for that honour.

I almost forgot the best one (or pair); along Chelsea embankment, opposite the house boats, there used to be two cars; and Aston Martin and a Bentley if I recall. They were "2 BE" and "NOT 2B".
And a pair of licence plates were once cited in a divorce case; B00 800 and 800 B00. I never heard whether they got split up or not.

I know it's not E-Type related, but I did see a couple of years back a fairly innocuous car with M15S GB displayed. Complete travesty of the number plate regs to split the letters like that, but.....
