Prop shaft sleeve yoke position
#1 Prop shaft sleeve yoke position
Simple question short answer.
At which end is the prop shaft sleeve yoke mounted? Gear box or diff and why?
Thanks

Propshafts always have the spline at the front as far as I'm aware. No idea why this should make any difference though. I suppose on the Jag with its fixed position diff, this will mean less mass being thrown backwards and forwards, but on other more conventional cars the opposite I would imagine.

Hugo,
Where the slip joint goes depends on the drivetrain. I do not have my e-type info handy, however XJ-S has one orientation for Borg Warner transmission and the opposite for the Turbo Hydromatic.
Must check... Don't guess.

that is why I am asking. Someone should know for sure. Strange it is nowhere noted.

Check how? It's certainly a good question. I can't see any logic in having different orientations for different gearboxes. Maybe it's just the way the fitters put them on when they worked on the cars? Oops, I'm guessing again ;)Geoff Green wrote:Hugo,

My instinct would be to put it so that spray and grit is less likely to be "pushing" it's way past the seal on the splined section.

See the manual page G.3...Propshaft with needle rollers and sliding spline at the front end.

But it still doesn't say WHY the front not the back?

Probably less dirt and maybe easier to grease during maintenance as the early prop shaft had a grease nipple for the sleeve yoke.
But I can now install the shaft and then the engine.
Apropos just opened another topic regarding broken automatic flywheel.

It is universal practice as far as I'm aware. I'd like to find out why? It would be easier at the back on an E Type, wouldn't it?
