#1 Oil Return Pipe

Post by gmunro » Sun Jul 02, 2017 6:54 pm

Hi Gents (and Ladies),

Re My 4.2 Series 1E-Type, I have bought a length of pipe from SNG B to connect the oil filter unit to the return pipe on the sump. This pipe is seriously reinforced and I have tried all my best efforts to connect the rubber pipe over the two metal fittings - one on the oil filter unit and the other on the sump. Try as I may, I cannot get the pipe over the fittings. I have tried heating the pipe to soften the rubber, applied WD40, applied oil, you name it and still I cannot get the pipe over the flanges of the two fittings. Help guys and gals ...... what can I do? My hands and wrists are wrecked and I am no further on! Yours aye. George

Yes that damn reinforced hose is a sod to get on the filter housing pipe and the sump pipe. :banghead:
I replaced mine recently when working on the oil relief v/v and ballance chamber.
I had the oil filter housing on the bench already. Remove the sump pipe fitting.
Beat on the rubber hose end with a medium hammer (you do not need weight, just frequent taps, this makes the rubber malable.
After a minute, quickly slip the hose fully onto the pipe, which needs to be secure in a vice.
Then do the same for the oil filter housing pipe.
This makes the job almost a pleasure.
Good luck :hammer:

Don't you love it when the valid solution is to beat on something? Its cathartic.

Oh and best drop the oil level, before you remove the return pipe from the sump

How about using silicone hose instead?
It means you'll have to find something else to beat on, but that's a small price to pay.

For what it's worth - and I'm not saying it is suitable material since it is used for hot water - silicone hose with different sized ends is freely available from people who sell heating supplies for coaches - such as THHS heating & ventilation.
