#1 Incorrect Fronont Lower Ball Joints
Hi,
1969 S2 2+2.
Just fitted a pair of the sealed XJ40 lower ball joints. They bolted up fine to the stub axle but the taper in the lower wishbone is larger so need to come off again.
Did the taper size change with S2? Can I get any other sealed type ball joints to fit or do I need to buy the original type with shims?
Thx

Hi Steve,
I did. All bolted up fine.
Got the Vernier gauge on the taper and slightly smaller dia on the XJ6/XJ12/XJS/XJ40 replacements. I'll check again but not hopeful. Part no. of the replacements is CAC9937. It does say Jaguar series 1 & 3.
Thx

I don't really understand this . Tapered joints by their very nature should go together solidly unless either the angle is wrong ( very unlikely ) or the difference in the taper diameter is a gross one. Where are you measuring the relative diameters? Incidentally I have fitted a number of the sealed XJ40 type and never had a problem , except that it is often necessary to shorten the fixing bolts

No idea what's going on here but it sounds pretty scary.

Good news....operator error. Slid the joint boots down- they were covering the full taper. All good
Thx
