#1 Heater fan motor very noisy

Post by fkay » Sun Jul 09, 2017 9:56 am

Hello

I turned my heater fan for the first time in 1 or 2 years and it makes a real racket! I assume it is the fan motor running in a dry bearing/bush. I think the motor has bronze bushes (not bearings).

Question 1: Do you use any lubricant in this area? I am not sure if you would use a light oil or graphite.

Question 2: If you were to lubricant do you have to take the whole fan assembly out?

Cheers
Francis

Hi Francis,

I had the same problem with my S2. Lubricant temporarily cures the problem, but pretty soon it returns. Best to replace fan for an updated more efficient one and replace the bearing, otherwise it will drive you mad!

As far as I recall the bearings are sintered bronze. They are slightly porous and intended to be soaked in oil so if you decided to rebuild yours (and why not) then best thing is to soak the bearings in 20/50 overnight. There will also be a felt pad next to the besring that should also have oil in it...intended to top up the bearing...but not too much. Fairly easy to strip and rebuild....go for it.

Thank you very much for your replies. I now have the heater out of car and about to soak bearings in oil
Kind regards
Francis
