#1 Engine swap

Post by thexkeprocess » Sat Sep 30, 2017 2:22 pm

In my continuing saga of getting my e type on the road again after a catastrophic engine failure I acquired a temporary replacement engine
The engine is a 4.2 from an 81 XJ 6
I understand that the water pump from my series 2 4.2 will fit
I noticed that the water cavity on the engine on the 81 is slightly different shape however my series 2 pump fits perfectly
If not then I will need to modify an 81 pump to fit my drive pulley without protruding to far
Any thoughts
Mark

Mark

Meant to say
Will a series 2 water pump work on an 81 engine if the cavity on the engine is slightly different or do I need to adapt the 81 pump by shortening the pulley shaft and pressing the series 2 pulley onto it
It would be easier to just install the series 2 pump
Can anyone confirm this
Any help appreciated
Mark

When I converted a V8 E back to XK engine I shortened the S3 pump shaft to clear the picture frame and machined off the rearmost vee from the pulley to let it sit further back.

Hi Mark,
What you need is the late model 3" series 2 pump C28414
The inlet has the correct turn as well.
