Hi Folks
Coming up to an oil change but I am still confused as what to use, I understand oils in the 60's contained zinc and modern oils don't, I have looked at both Castrol GTX and Halfords Classic motor oil and neither state that they contain zinc. Should I buy a modern oil and add ZDDP or trust that the classic oils are made to the same specification as the originals or does it matter?

Interesting link Tim. I'd be interested to hear what other E owners use, and how important they think the zinc content is for an E - what zinc content do people go for?

I currently use Millers Classic 20W50 semi-synthetic. This oil is designed for Jags and Astons etc.
My opinion is that as long as the oil is changed regularly, ie at least once a year or every 3,000 miles, the type or brand of oil isn’t hugely important. Halfords 20W50 is as good as the stuff I use, only a little bit cheaper. I drove a Vauxhall Senator for 177k miles using only cheap 20W50 dino-oil.-oil.

I think it is irrelevant what oil you use. I use Valvoline XLD 20W 50 because it is cheap. It gets changed every one to 2 years which for my cars is under 5000 miles.

Thanks for the links folks, I went for the Classic Oils' own high-zinc classic 20W50 mineral oil, it seems to tick all of the boxes.
