#1 Straight through exhaust for 62 OTS

Post by 80 XKE » Wed May 05, 2010 7:45 am

Having entered second childhood some time ago, I fancy a rorty burble and would ask for advice on what sort of straight-through system, or, part system I should have fitted.
In my day, Servais were the only suppliers. No doubt things are different now?
Any tips or assistance will be much appreciated.
Thanks, Geoff.

If you have an S1/S2 then check out the ClassicFabs system which is a work of art physically and orally. You can even 'tune' the sound. For an S3 the AJ6 system gets excellent reviews.

Geoff,

if I were you I would seriously think about what you are proposing as on a long run, it becomes extremely tedious!

As Angus says a true 'straight through' system would be incredibly noisy and could compromise engine performance. Best combination is to use the standard cast iron manifolds with a big bore system beyond that. e.g. http://www.classicfabs.co.uk/full_systems.html

ClassicFabs offer different venturis so you can adjust the sound from Swiss quiet to hoodlum. Unsurprisingly I favour the latter! My car is very loud but never tiring even on mammoth trips; travel fast enough and you leave the sound behind
The venturi on the left can be inserted to reduce resonance in the silencer - it speeds up the gases and is the recommended standard fitment. The venturi on the right is the 'Swiss' version, named after the country with strict noise limits rather than Gruy?re cheese. Although it has the same cross sectional area as the 'swamped' venturi it causes the gases to alter direction, create turbulence and improves the silencers effect significantly. The end is closed off except for a 10mm hole. Classic Fabs can supply either (or both if you want to experiment) to suit your requirements:

Obviously one type only is fitted to the manifold side of the silencers.

Geoff,

I did it on the cheap : replacing it by 2 x Superflow mufflers (no baffles ) and 4.2 silencers .
Nice growl more in line with this kind of car, maybe limit noisy around 2500/3000 Rpm  But not much before or after that, just enought to be noticed by the guys with V8 cars or hot 4s

Good thinking Echezeaux

I'm on the case and looking at all the options, but yours sounds attractive (aurally).

Whilst having the attention of all you experts, have any of you heard aurally of anyone saying orally that they know the whereabouts of a genuine 'original equipment' jack?

Geoff.

Geoff

The Metalifacture jacks, ratchet and bag appear fairly regularly on eBay but double check it is the correct one for the E-Type.
