Flushed with the success of restoring and converting the Ford Cortina jack I decided to restore the Metallifacture in the OTS as it was looking a bit sorry for itself. It was only after dismantling I realised it was missing the knurled disc used to raise/lower the jack a tad with the fingers (common problem, lowering the jack can force the spring clip off and with it the knob). I was resigned to using a simple washer to fill the gap but on the off chance contacted Richard Smith. Nothing should surprise me about Richard's part stores but even I was dumbfounded to find he has reproductions of the Metallifacture knurled wheel

If you are ever unsure about finding a part for an E-Type, no matter how tenuous, email Richard! rmj@rmjsmith.fsnet.co.uk

Today decided to put some order in the trunk of the S2 and prepare for replacing the SU points fuel pump with an electronic one. Then incidentally though about checking the jack and lubricating it. To my horror: the jack I found in the bag is not the one I had with the car!
Last time I took it out of the trunk was some 5 years back in the south of France on the parking lot of a restaurant to lend it to a couple in a UK registered gunmetal S1 fhc having a flat and had no jack on board. They gave it back to me just a min later in the bag still closed before I even closed the trunk back, claiming they finally decided to inflate and drive to a tyre repair shop. So obviously made a swap...
What a sad story. My original jack is gone, and below is the one I have now. I am trying to see whether we had any picture taken of the gunmetal S1 where the license plate would appear so I would nicely try to locate this friendly couple...

In conclusion: have been s*****d, driving 5 years with the wrong jack but luckily never needed it, now have to find a proper one or convert this one.
2015 can start, I will think twice before lending!

Terrible behaviour! Drop Carsten a PM/email as he had an XJ6 jack going spare. Conversion is really easy with the three replacement parts from Richard Smith (shoe, rivet and spring clip) and the Metallifacture handles regularly appear on eBay for around ?10 if it is missing.

Yes those are the correct details for Richard which are also in the Forum Knowledge Base. They do not have a web site because they mostly deal with the big suppliers but Richard is happy to supply direct if you email him and mention the Forum.

Mike Cassidy wrote an interesting article in this months E-Type Club magazine and it includes an excellent tip. The jack from a Porsche 944 will fit provided you file off some metal from the long ends of the lift spigot. These jacks are aluminium, 17" long by 4" high when collapsed and extend to 15.5". They appear regularly on eBay and seem to sell for about ?30:

Note: the Boxster jack does not have sufficient lift.
