Steering column squeak

Can somebody advise me on a solution to eradicate a squeak/rubbing noise at the steering wheel end of the Column of a series 1 4.2 1966.

I had the same problem.

If the column is sloppy the bushing is broken. If it is noisy, it is worn.

The easiest way to fix it is to remove the shaft from the knuckle in the foot well. Do not try to remove the steering wheel as you will end up damaging the horn push.

Before you withdraw it, mark the engagement points at the knuckle to ensure that you install it with the correct alignment otherwise your self cancelling turn indicators will be off.

There have been many discussions about the replacement bushing and, as usual, they don't make them like they used to.

A temporary fix is to lubricate the bushing without performing major surgery.

Last year I rebuilt my steering column and was supplied with soft rubber bushes.
Squeeking and then sloppyness, at one point the upper bush came up out of the outer column (at the MoT station).

Last week I replaced them, this time the bushes supplied from the same source were very polybush type, a lot firmer with a hard plasticy finnish.

Put them in with red rubber grease on the shaft, steering is transformed. Easier to turn the wheel, no slop. Silent too. I expect they will last longer as well.
