#1 Interior panel covering?

Post by mach2andy » Mon Oct 14, 2019 8:43 am

The interior panel pictured is still in primer, but I'm wondering if any of it will be visible once the interior is trimmed, and therefore do I need to paint it? If it is covered, what is it covered in, vinyl or hardura? I don't have the forward section of boot board [the one that folds up] so I don't really know what this arrangement looks like. I think it's hinged but it's not obvious to me where these hinges attach. I assume that there are 2 spigots either end of the board that locate into the spring latches that can be seen either end of the grey panel. A couple of pictures would be very helpful.
Thanks in advance.
Andy

Hi Andy
With my S1 3.8, I etch primed it and then glued a thin foam scrim on the outer face that ‘shows’ followed by vinyl as per the original.
I’ve included some pics of the finished item in situ (didn’t take pics of the recovering) and also of the folding cubby lid, before and after so you can hopefully see the hinges and other hardware. I retained all the original hardware, but added a chrome strip along the bottom edge of the hinged lid, to provide support as the original was splitting and looked like had had water damage.

Hi Richard
Brilliant. As is often the case, a picture tells a thousand stories. I assume that the smaller boot board that sits widthwise above the IRS is fixed in position rather than liftable as the 2 rear boards are?
ATB and thanks again.

On my 3.8, I only had the 2 boards - the one over the tank and the other over the spare. Neither of these seem original as they have no fixing holes, support bracket etc.
I believe the tank board should be screwed down using some ‘odd’ spec screws and cup washers and the tank side has some spring clips similar to the cubby arrangement. As for the board over the IRS access cover, some suppliers include it in a board ‘kit’, some don’t. It may depend on model/year.

Hi Andy,

I did not have any original trim in my car, so after some considerable investigation I discovered:

The up stand behind the seats that you are referring to was covered on the front face with vinyl and under this was a thin (1/8" ish) Jute material. I found the alternative scrim foam too thick and spongy at about 3mm, so I chose to use an old woollen short pile blanket that I was given by my mother in law!
I cannot be conclusive but I believe the back of this panel is just painted satin black.
I chose to cover it with vinyl but no backing.

The front boot board over the IRS slides under the bracket at the front of the IRS hump where the hinges are and at the back there is a bracket

(that's expensive!) screwed on to the bottom of the board and three screws go through this and into some raised "top hat" brackets spot welded to the rear of the IRS panel in front of the tank.

I can post some pictures if you need them.
