Engine Temperatures
#1 Engine Temperatures
Hi all, I am working through my recently acquired S1 4.2 and am interested to know what thermostats are typically fitted to S1's, and what temps the engine fans are set to come on. My car appears to have an 82 degree thermostat with the fan set to cut in at 90 - is this normal? (its an aftermarket fan). The car seems to run around 85 degrees indicated on the guage.

I would not be dogmatic, but I believe the standard thermostats were 78 and 82, with an 88 one for very cold climates. The design running temp of the XK engine was much lower than is now fashionable at about 70 - 75 degrees C, so 85 is a bit hot

Hi Michael....there has been a huge amount of discusion here on the forum re thermostats so the search function could be usefull...apart from the correct temperature do you actually have the correct stat fitted...have a look here viewtopic.php?p=65081#p65081

Before making any changes or modifications to anything, I'd suggest you verify the temperature first. The gauge and senders are notoriously inaccurate, perhaps not by large number of degrees but certainly within the range you're concerned about. You could spend a lot of time changing thermostat and switch only to find out the gauge was 5-10 degrees off all along.
