Recently had a leak from the carb which was found to be the fuel sump plug, whipped it out
And fitted a new one but the old one was so rough I did them all. Worked for two weeks and 3 of them leaking. Popped them out and found o seal eaten away. Now I'm no rocket scientist but these o seals are the incorrect material, just a warning as they were purchased from one of the larger spares outfits.
Stromberg fuel sump plug
#2 Re: Stromberg fuel sump plug
Hi Jon.
From experience, the bodies of the sumps often corrode and new seals alone won’t solve the problem. Clean the sealing face of the dump plug hole and select a fuel proof sealant. Smear it lightly around the seal, keeping it below the upper level of the seal -do not smear it inside the plug hole because as the plug goes in it will push the sealant up into the hole. Once installed and tight, smear more sealant around the base, filling any gap as best as possible.
Some early plugs are brass and screw in, but if you have the plastic plug, the age of the plug is also against you and the tension in the clip design of the plastic plug legs is often lost. New plugs, together with the new seals and sealant are the answer below is a photo of a plastic plug with the sealant application as described, prior to installation.
