#1 Timing marks.

Post by skodajag » Thu Sep 02, 2021 3:24 pm

Seeking help with interpreting the rusted and only partially legible timing marks on a 4.2 series 2 e type (US import)
This is what they appear to be, but can’t be because they make no sense:
AFTER
4
0
4
8
12
16
0
4
8
12
BEFORE

Thank you.

If in doubt , why not check where TDC really is on no. 6 ,then either re-mark the old markings , or add a new set in a more convenient place ie. not underneath where you have to crawl under the engine to see them ( nul points for whichever bright spark came up with that idea  ) :salute:

I agree with Mark.

There's no point trying to decipher someone else's hieroglyphics.

Find TDC, then measure the diameter of your balancer and calculate what distance back 5 degrees and 10 degrees are. Mark these, and Bob's your uncle.

As mark also says, get an XJ6 timing mark indicator C29369 from one of the usuals. These mount on the side of the timing cover on two of its bolts and are easily visible inside the engine bay. Mark the balancer accordingly.

Edit: if you have a S2 car you may already have C29369 fitted.

It would make sense if you could interpret it as:
AFTER 4 0 4 8 12 16 20 24 28 32 BEFORE

Brilliant.

And perfect for checking advance across the range with a dial back light.
