Ok, thanks, I think it must have been for the starter motor, it’s not for the engine mounts. Except I had the later closed type of starter, which does not have such a shield in the parts manual.
Was a shield nevertheless original equipment for the later starters? It is fibrous material same as all the other oem shields, not metal. I can’t remember how it was mounted.
I’ve fitted one of those miniature geared starters which shouldn’t need shielding as it leaves plenty of room. It has significantly better performance (higher speed, less voltage drop) however I am not overly confident about its durability so I am allowing for the possibility that in future I may have to revert to the oem starter despite that, with 134 tooth flywheel and HE compression, it struggles when battery charge is low.
