#1 2+2 headlining installation

Post by inner pickle » Sat May 07, 2022 7:30 am

Hello all,

my '66 2+2 Series 1 is "getting there"

Previously my interior upholstery kit has been sourced from BAS

at the rear I have the ( BD29353) headlining retainers on order via SNG Barratt. To the side's I have the cant rails duly trimmed and ready to fit.
However to the front as we prepare to complete around the sun visor area and to the rear of where the rear view mirror is going to be installed what trim is required to complete the roof lining?

Currently I've viewed most of the trim suppliers we know and have sought further information wherever I can and drawn a blank. Barratt's do outline what appears to be a trim piece to this area " trim panel assembly to windscreen header rail" but it's no longer available. I assume the headlining would be dressed around this piece, without it?

any thoughts?

:thankyouyellow:

Do you think this is what you are after?

This one is mine ready to go in to my 3.8 coupe.

I'm pretty sure they are no longer available, although you could check with Richard Smith to see if he is aware of any availability. I got mine from Ken Verity a few years ago.

Out of interest, what foam did you use when you re-trimmed the cant rails/crash pads?

Regards
Stuart

Hi Stuart,

my thanks for going to the trouble to display the pictures, ....off the top of my head I'd say yes, that looks like the part, certainly from the (small) image on the SNG Barratt spares page.

I'll check during the week re cant rail coverings when I pop over to view the car under restoration.

at the very least, armed with these images we may be able to replicate - keep you posted.

many thanks / John

Thanks John

I think I might have some photos of the un-trimmed panel. I'll have a look tomorrow.

Hi John

See attached for some images of the panel before it was stripped, painted and re-trimmed.

Have you tried Chuck at Monocoque Metalworks?
They reproduce many hard to get panels.

Hi Richard / Stuart

my grateful thanks for your input and support here.

Indeed, Stuart, that composite material as you show is the same as the compound used elsewhere around the cant rail area were you to retain the original pieces. I have a couple of these left over when removed from my original car prior to refurb - but for the rear of the car/windows, not this front section.

Its funny stuff isn't it, like a dense friable board with a flexible ali strip behind it. I guess little / no value in commissioning re-tooling for replacement parts.

I'm progressing with one source but will contact your possible supplier Richard if I draw a blank....

kind regards / John

Hi John

You've slightly confused me here. The pictures I posted are of a pressed steel panel that is covered in headlining material and is fitted above the windscreen and held in place by the rear view mirror and the sun visors.

I thought I had some pictures of the panel without the material attached but I can't find them. I would have thought that your car would be the same but others here might know differently. I only know what is relevant to the series 1 coupe.

I hope you manage to find what you need.

Regards
Stuart

again, thanks for your input both,

these images give my restorer the chance to fabricate what's needed.

I've asked around the usual places and checked out Chuck, however knowing as we do, they'll probably be found at the Jaguar Spares Day. Unfortunately that'll be too late as we're almost 98% complete.

hence we'll fabricate based on these photo's

thanks again both

John

Good luck! I seem to remember another member fabricating this as well - ABowie possibly? I could be wrong. May be worth searching the forum as it may help.
