#1 2+2 1970 wiring question (need help)

Post by autoalain » Fri Nov 11, 2022 11:45 am

Folks, the harness in front (not the alternater wire harness) about 5 inches in front of voltage regulator, there is one black wire with a material cover that I have no idea where it goes, I have verified it is not grounded,
also a little further up the harness, (about 5 inches in back of the two wires RG/B that goes to the brake
warning fluid) there is another black wire covered in light brown material) I have no idea where this wire goes,
it also is not grounded, checked with ohms meter. this car is also a basket case that I got dismantled,
I have wire harness display and cannot find where they go, I have tried a meter in the dash but have given
up finding the other end of these two separate wires (steve r u there?, u seem to know lots)

I have come across this problem many times on bikes and cars that I have restored, the simple solution is to buy a simple RF signal tracer set, available cheaply on Ebay and many other outlets. It works by sending a radio signal down the unknown wire and then tracking it through the loom using a receiver wand (supplied in the kit) to its destination. It then is easy to decide where it should be connected or if its needed at all. I paid £25 for mine and it has been very useful around the house too.

If it is a black wire then it is a wire to be grounded , and usually these have a circular end

Putting a circuit tester between the wire and ground will show no circuit, because the circuit of which the black wire forms a part only is completed when the black wire is grounded

Hi....whats your name..please try to put it in the signature area with your car model..........wireing.....there is a lot going on in that area..typically under the cloth cover of each wire there is a black covering...ideally you could undo the harness wrapping so you can pull back the wire and find its colour......in this area you have the hydrailic fluid bottles.....and the relays on the mudshiels and the 3aw unit above the regulator......and the brake pressure switch....and heater wireing.....so basically identify all wireing and see whats missing.......Steve

Thanks for reply, it is not brake pressure switch, heater wire, or bottles, or relay, my only guess could be a/c compressor
, everything else is accounted for, gounds wires are all in, both wires do go back inside somethere,
that tracer idea seems good, but I guess I will just do a start up and see what is not working,
due to cost I have removed all the a/c stuff but never did find the wires for it (basket case). also the
black wire does have a material (brown) that covers it, I do not think jag ever covers ground wires
with material but I may be wrong.

Could it be the Otter switch wires?
