#1 Hood fitting

Post by Heronscourt » Fri Mar 24, 2023 6:48 pm

How many hours does it take to fit a series 2 hood. The new tack strip is fitted together with the leatherette over the tack strip into the cockpit. The hood frame has been restored and the front canopy has had the underneath covered, chromes and hold down straps fitted so it’s just attaching the hood. I have the new hood cover. I’ve been quoted £1240 which at £60/ hr equates to 20 hrs. Sounds excessive to me. I would think that the £60 I’ve estimated would be correct for a specialist fitter.

I’d suggest it depends on who is doing the work and the quality of the fit. From what I understand from others, some companies are very particular about making the hood really fit like a glove with no gaps to the windows or windscreen. All that takes quite a bit of time, could that be the reason for the quote?

I was in just about the same place as you.
Tack strip fitted and covered. Hood frame restored and painted. Mine wasn’t covered but the fit was good.

I supplied the new hood made by Aldridge which looked perfect.
I found a local trimmer who claimed to have fitted etype hoods previously. Paid £400 to fit the hood covering , webbing straps and to cover the front panel.

My guess is that sounds good value ? The downsides are that the job is atrocious and I will at some time have to have the hood removed and refitted.
My guidance ( previously given to me but I didn’t listen to) is to find a recognised trimmer who is clearly experienced with e types and pay whatever is asked.
