#1 2+2 speaker grilles

Post by Marcusu » Tue Aug 27, 2024 4:05 pm

Hi all,
My Series 3 2+2 has a pair of naff modern speaker grilles in the panel behind the doors
I’d like to replace them with the correct looking grille and bezels.
Does anyone know where to find these? Would the parts from the Series 1 to 3 XJ6 or XJ-S door speakers fit?
Many thanks,
Marcus

Are there “correct” grilles? Were they an original fit? Certainly other period Jaguar parts might look more in keeping.

Hi Marcus - the speaker grilles on my 1972 series 3 2+2 look to be original. I can send you a photo if you send me a PM. Lots of grilles on ebay, amazon etc to chose from given that the usual suppliers no longer have these available (as far as my brief trawl of SNGB and M Robey went).
Not that easy to remove the trim which goes into the upper cant rail but it's somewhat flexible - remove the coat hanger hooks beforehand. It's a rear seat removal job to get access to first remove the vinyl covered trim panel which wraps partially around the B post. Those Jaguar assembly guys obviously had small fingers to fit the forward set screws.
Whilst you have the side panel access open, it's worth checking for any rust and a spray with the Eastwoods greenish coloured rust sealant (with extension tube) may be sensible or, if no rust, with a wax spray which comes with an extension tube. If your model has the seat belt cartridge mounted in the recess next to the B-Post, it's only one bolt to be removed to get it out of the way first. Also take a look a the two recesses either side which are exposed when the rear seat is removed (undo the 4 setscrews after removing the forward floor panel) and just move the seat back a bit into the boot space). Again a spray with Eastwoods may be required but take care with it otherwise you end up looking like a green alien.
As usual, having a smaller physique and flexible joints helps in the confined spaces.
All the best
Chris
