#1 Issue with ignition light and other related or perhaps unrelated issues

Post by baldyz1 » Sat Apr 18, 2026 6:44 pm

Hi, I wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction.

I am working on the very last few remaining issues on my 1966 series 1 2+2 after a 10 year total restoration.

From the moment the car was first started the ignition light has stayed on. Being a total restoration all the electrics were new together with a new loom.

I have read that the voltage regulator [even from new] can be at fault and sometimes the 3AW relay [again from new]. I have not tested the alternator outputs specifically as yet but the car does not seem to lose charge when in use and when you rev the engine the lights get brighter including the ignition light, so I have no reason to suspect the brand new alternator.

Which would people suspect more the regulator or the 3AW or could it be something else.

On another note the Ammeter appears to be stuck roughly between the middle and the C. I have disconnected the battery and the needle does not return to base. I have tapped it and again no movement. Is it common for the needles to stick or do we think this refurbished [by Speedograph] unit has failed?

Any help gratefully received.
Chris

You need to start testing...yes provably the 3AW.... the ammeter should be in the middle if the battery is disconnected....

Thanks Steve, I have ordered an upgraded solid state type from SNG.
