#1 Handbrake Cable Series 1 2+2 run out of adjustment

Post by baldyz1 » Tue May 05, 2026 11:30 am

Hi,

I am struggling to work out a problem with my handbrake. Its the last problem in my 10 year build process. All of the braking system is new and its a new handbrake cable. The handbrake nips up at the extreme but not enough to hold the car on a hill for instance.

I have been under the car and it looks like the cable nipple has got travel before even engaging in its cage even with the adjuster at its most extreme setting. I cannot tell if the automatic adjustment is working but given everything is new and well lubricated I suspect the operation is smooth enough. I have had the access panels off within the car but this still does not give me access to the adjusters to check manually or any way of getting the split pin out as I see documented.

The cable was bought from Manners in early 2018 under part C25448* and this is now superceded by part C30221. I checked with Manners and there were no notes of any being returned as too long as far as the staff member could tell.

So do I change the cable and hope its that. I have had a look at the handbrake end and I cannot see the cable connection at that end by removing the cubby box so is that from underneath or do I have to remove the whole console including the radio box?

or do I undo the cable from the axle end and try and excercise the self adjusters? Is there any way to easily undo the callipers from underneath in order to check the adjusters perhaps?

Basically what would people try first and what can be accessed without dropping the axle?

All help gratefully received.

Hi Steve,

I personally think its too long given there is slack before you even start pulling the rear levers. If I order a new cable is there any way to get to the handbrake end by just removing the cubby or does the whole console have to come out? The car is complete and in a good place now. My experience of taking stuff back out is that there is often superficial damage to trim etc.. and I would describe her as concours right now.

As and example last night I broke one end off the legend bar by just pressing to hard on the open instrument panel... damn it!

Many thanks
Chris

I suppose the better question is, if you remove the bolts [4 I think] holding the handbrake to the driveshaft tunnel does that allow you to bring the cable attachment inside the vehicle so you can unhook it or is it typically etype and not so easy? I am assuming of course you need to detach the axle end first.

Thanks for your help Steve.
