I have just read an article which states that if you spray self etching primer over existing paint work it will lift the original surface. Im in the process of repainting the underside of my series 1 bonnet and where i have rubbed back to the bare metal i have sprayed with etch primer but of course the immediate area of existing paintwork (rubbed down) is also sprayed.
Could anyone advise on this matter?

Unless the paint You have sprayed over is new or synthetic based it will be OK. Is it a 'wash' etch or a etch primer. The difference been that one is to be primed over with a good two pack primer the other is a one pack primer with etching qualities.

Yes it will be OK. Just scotch brite it before priming unless You are going to primer the whole panel. Then You can use 240 grit.
